             - Invitation and Call for Papers -

           MODERNE DIALEKTE - NEUE DIALEKTOLOGIE
            [Modern dialects - New dialectology]

The Inaugural International Dialectologist Congress of the IGDD
[International Society for German Dialectology].

DATE: 5-8 March 2003
LOCATION: Philipps University, Marburg, Germany

Following its founding congress in Goettingen in 1998, the
International Society for German Dialectology (IGDD) now announces its
first International Dialectologist Congress, to be held between 5 and
8 March 2003 and hosted by the Research Institute for German Language
- "Deutscher Sprachatlas" in Marburg, Germany.

TOPIC
Theme of the Congress is "Modern dialects - New dialectology". This
will focus in particular on the process of change discernible in all
dialects, affecting their linguistic structure, the socio-
communicative conditions that frame them, and especially the function
of dialects in the context of ongoing social negotiation. To be able
to adequately address this novel situation, a "new dialectology" is
needed, with new theoretical approaches and methodologies.

STRUCTURE
The topic will be the guiding focus of the planned plenary sessions
and section-based discussions, together with a forum "Sprachvariation"
[linguistic variation] for younger academics. To this end, the IGDD
steering and advisory committees have created nine sections: regional
phonology - structure and dynamics; dialectal morphology and syntax;
dialectal lexicography; language atlases; dialectal sociology;
linguistic island research; historical dialectology; dialectological
literature studies; history of the discipline.

SUBMISSIONS
Should you be interested in actively participating in the Congress,
please provide the appropriate section head or the steering committee
with details of a title, a ten-line abstract, and your address before
31.3.2002. The relevant addresses are available, along with further
information about the Congress, from the IGDD homepage:
http://www.igdd.gwdg.de

DEADLINE for receipt of abstracts: 31 March 2002

CONFERENCE FEE: 15 Euros

ACCOMMODATION/TRANSPORT
Details regarding accommodation, transport etc. will be posted on the
IGDD web pages later in the year. This site will be updated regularly,
and those interested in attending the Congress are encouraged to
