For a decade or so, the biennial International Symposium on Chinese
Languages and Linguistics (IsCLL) has become a major academic event
for the small but lively linguistic community of Taiwan. The upcoming
eighth symposium (IsCLL VIII), scheduled for November 8-10, 2002 and
jointedly hosted by the Institute of Linguistics of Academia Sinica
and the Linguistic Society of Taiwan, will bear PHONOLOGY as its
general theme.  The highlights of IsCLL8 will be plenary talks by
three distinguished researchers in the focal area:

Larry Hyman (UC Berkeley)
Ian Maddieson (UC Berkeley)
Yen-Hwei Lin (Michigan State University)

and a special session organized by Prof. Lin Yen-hwei and specifically
devoted to issues related to TONE. The following scholars have been
invited as panelists for the TONE session:

Moira Yip
Matthew Chen
Duanmu San
Zhiming Bao

The organizing committee of IsCLL VIII cordially invites abstracts for
theoretical and descriptive studies on the languages of China, with
preference given to all areas of phonology as well as interface
(e.g. phonetic, morpho-syntactic) work addressing phonological
issues. Abstracts (in Chinese or English) should be anonymous, and may
be up to five typewritten pages (including additional charts, data,
and references) long, with a separate page indicating title of paper,
subject area, author's name and affiliation, and mailing/email
addresses. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2002. Each abstract
will be reviewed by at least two scholars commissioned by the
organizing committee. Accepted authors (to be announced by May 31,
2002) should send us their fully completed papers of no longer than
twenty typed camera-ready pages by September 9, 2002 for website
posting and inclusion in the symposium proceedings. Upon acceptance of
their abstracts, authors are committed to present original papers
written exclusively for IsCLL VIII. All final presenters will receive
waiver of conference fee, plus traveling stipends and complimentary
on-campus accommodation for the duration of the symposium.

Call for Abstracts: Workshop on the Semantics/Syntax of Possessive
Constructions

Abstracts are invited for 30-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes
discussion) on topics dealing with the semantics and/or syntax of
possessive constructions. The proceedings of which will be published
both in Moscow and Amherst. Limit one individual abstract plus one
joint abstract per author.

Send a ONE-PAGE ANONYMOUS abstract, with one optional additional page
for examples, by e-mail to: poss at linguist.umass.edu. Please specify
Abstract for workshop in the subject line, and the following
information in the body of the message:

1) title of paper
2) author's name(s)
3) address and affiliation
4) telephone and/or fax numbers
5) e-mail address

Electronic abstracts may be sent as plain text, or as files in Word,
Word Perfect, PDF, .ps or .prn format. The organizers cannot be
responsible for problems arising from clashes of hardware or software;
try to embed fonts in any files you send and/or avoid the use of
non-standard fonts. No fax submissions will be accepted.

Since we are rather late in getting this call for abstracts out, we
have decided to forgo submissions by standard mail as well. (If,
however, electronic submission is absolutely impossible, please get in
touch with us right away.)

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: February 20, 2002.

(Authors are advised to re-check examples and glosses with speakers of
the languages involved.)

Attempts will be made to partially subsidize accommodation costs for
participants from economically disadvantaged countries; the extent of

be posted on the website.
