Subject:  Training workshop: lexicom at itri 2002

			   14-19 July 2002

Applications to this training workshop are invited from people with
experience in at least one of the following disciplines:

· lexicography
· linguistics
· computational linguistics
· computer support for dictionary projects
· translation
· terminology

The principal topics to be covered are:

· writing dictionary entries
· building and working with text corpora
· automatic corpus analysis for lexicography


All sessions will include practical work at a computer terminal.

The workshop will be led by the Lexicography MasterClass partners:
    Sue Atkins, Adam Kilgarriff and Michael Rundell.

Early registration is advised, and carries a discounted fee.

The first Lexicom Workshop was held in July 2001. 50 participants from
21 countries attended the Workshop, and a further 20 applicants were put
on the waiting list for 2002.

Subject:  Call for Nominations

Call for Nominations for Secretary-Treasurer of the Linguistic Society of
America

The Secretary-Treasurer is the constitutionally designated chief fiscal
officer of the Society.  The responsibilities of the Secretary-Treasurer
shall include keeping the records of the deliberations of the Society and
the Executive Committee, presenting an annual report to the Society, which
shall be published by the Society, supervising publications of the Society
which are not the responsibility of the Editor, and such functions as may
be assigned by the President and the Executive Committee.  Although the
Secretary-Treasurer is elected annually, the recent tradition has been to
serve for five consecutive years.

During their term in office, all past Secretary-Treasurers have been
faculty members in residence at their own universities.  They have been
able to continue to pursue research interests, to maintain faculty
commitments, and to meet administrative responsibilities because the work
of the Society is generally carried out by the Secretariat in Washington.
The Secretariat, currently staffed by three employees, administers and
manages the work of the Society under the direction of and in frequent
communication with the Secretary Treasurer.

Each year the Secretary-Treasurer receives a modest honorarium in
recognition of service and is reimbursed for office supplies and the
expense of a telephone at his or her university office, as well as for
travel on LSA business.

The members of the Ad Hoc Secretary-Treasurer Search Committee (Elizabeth
C. Traugott, Chair) welcome applications and nominations from any member.
The Committee would also be pleased to respond to inquiries about the
position and to supply detailed information on the responsibilities.  The
deadline for receipt of materials is 1 July 2002.  All applications and
nominations should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae and be sent to: Ad
