CALL FOR PAPERS - GAL - 2002, COLOGNE, GERMANY, September 19-21, 2002

Contrastive Linguistics and Intercultural Communication

The theme of Section 9 of the GAL (German Applied Linguistics) Meeting
2002 will be:

Contrasts of/Contrasting intra- & intercultures in business
communication - linguistic and semiotic realisations.

The international business world relies on successful and efficient
communication processes, whether realised in face-to-face interactions
or through other media. However, there is growing awareness of the
challenges posed to international business by linguistic/pragmatic
'failures' in communication between and across cultures. Intercultural
business communication offers a wide field of research for applied
linguists, with important opportunities for not only improving
business practice, but also for carrying the results of research into
the practices of communication training and foreign language teaching.

In addition to this theme, Section 9 will include a workshop
(Arbeitskreis) to continue discussion on the 2001 theme, Multimodality
and Multimediality. Multimodal semiosis, involving combinations of,
for example, text, image, sound - potentially drawing on combinations
of different media for communication, such as photography, film,
print, internet - poses a range of challenges to applied linguists,
both in terms of theory and methodology for analysis. Papers for the
Arbeitskreis may embrace the main theme of business communication, but
papers dealing with multimodality/multimedialtiy in other fields will
also be considered.

The organisers invite interested participants to submit abstracts for
Section 9 (Business Language) or the Workshop (Multimodality and
Multimediality). While the organisers are not able to support the
participants' travel or accommodation costs, we can provide supporting
letters for funding applications. Abstracts of 150-200 words long
should be sent to both of the e-mail addresses below by 15th April
2002.
