	Seminar: Live Issues in Descriptive Linguistic Analysis

On Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the University of Michigan, there
will be a day-long seminar in memory of Kenneth L. Pike (1912-2000),
linguist and teacher.

The day will begin with what he called a Monolingual
Demonstration, one of his best devices for teaching descriptive
linguistics. A linguist confronts a speaker of a language unknown to him
or her (the linguist in this case will be Dr. Daniel Everett, University
of Manchester) and begins to learn it, using no English.  The speaker of
the unknown language leaves the room and there is discussion of what has
been learned, what problems have emerged, and what might be learned next.
The speaker returns, and the demonstration proceeds until it seems that
everyone has had enough.  At that point, we shift to English, check the
results, and talk about how to understand what happened.

At noon we will provide lunch. (On us.  Please let us know by
email --live.issues at umich.edu -- if you will be joining us for lunch.)

After lunch the seminar will continue with discussion about some
of the issues Pike was concerned with.  We've asked a few linguists from
Michigan and elsewhere to introduce these issues and lead the discussion
of them, but everyone present is encouraged to take part.

At the end of the day, Professor John R. Ross will summarize the
discussion and present some of Pike's poetry.

We have tried to plan the kind of open seminar Pike would enjoy.
The title, Live Issues, is taken from the booklet of that name which he
used in his own seminar on Descriptive Linguistics.  Anyone who would like
a copy of the 1955 and 1967 editions of the booklet should request them
via the email address above.  The seminar will be held in the Kuenzel Room
of the Michigan Union, beginning at 9:30 am.  Anyone interested in
attending all or part of the seminar is welcome.

The speech corpus "AVIP"

is now available in cd format.

The work was coordinated by Pier Marco Bertinetto, Scuola Normale
Superiore (Pisa), and was carried out by the following research teams:

The materials are also accessible via anonymous ftp at ftp.cirass.it
(username "anonymous", password "your e-mail address") and are
contained in the folder cirass/pub/avip.

The corpus AVIP consists of semi-spontaneous spoken materials (plus
lists of read words), collected in the form of so-called "map task
dialogues" in three localities: Bari, Napoli and Pisa. In addition,
the corpus includes a speech sample produced by hearing-impaired and
normal children.
Specifically, the corpus includes 39 semi-spontaneous dialogues
produced by young adult speakers, and 5 dialogues produced by
children, for a total of about 14 hours. 15 adult speakers' dialogues
(plus all the 5 produced by children) are orthographically
transcribed (about 350 minutes). In particular, 75 minutes of speech
are phonetically segmented and labelled (and a smaller subset is also
prosodically labelled).
Finally, 4 dialogues are annotated at textual level.

The entire documentation of the project is available by ftp, as well
as in the cd version.
