THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

The University of Hong Kong is a leading international comprehensive
research university in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 100
teaching departments and sub-divisions of studies and learning, and
over 60 research institutes and centres.  There is currently an
enrolment of some 17,000 students (6,500 at postgraduate level).
Research students are from more than 48 countries.  The medium of
instruction is English.  The University is committed to the pursuit of
international academic standards, and excellence in scholarship as
well as research.

Assistant Professor in English Linguistics

Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in
English Linguistics in the Department of English (Ref:
RF-2001/2002-280).  The appointment, which is subject to availability
of funding, will initially be made on a three-year fixed-term basis,
tenable from 1 September 2002, with the possibility of renewal.

The Department of English provides an integrated programme in
English Studies, offering teaching and supervision in English and
American literatures, world literature in English, sociolinguistics,
critical linguistics, and English language and linguistics.

Applicants should possess a PhD degree.  The appointee should be
able to teach a range of courses in English linguistics, with a
specialisation in some of the following areas: history of English,
English grammar, English morphology and lexicon, sociolinguistics,
language and public institutions (e.g. language and media, language
and law, language and business).    The appointee will be expected to
offer courses in their areas of specialization; contribute to the
teaching of existing courses at both undergraduate and Master's
levels; supervise MPhil and PhD students; contribute to the teaching
in the proposed new undergraduate interdisciplinary programme in
Language and Communication; and pursue an active programme of
research and publication.  Applicants should note that the Department
is not an ESL teaching unit.

Annual salary [attracting contract-end gratuity and University
contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15%
of basic salary] for an Assistant Professor (in the grade of Lecturer)
is on an 11-point scale (which is subject to review from time to
time in accordance with the University's established mechanism),
with starting salary depending on qualifications and experience:
HK$581,940 - HK$972,180* (approx.  £52,188 - £87,176;
Sterling equivalents as at 21 March 2002).  *An appointee with
an annual salary of HK$777,600 (approx. £69,728) or above may
be considered for the award of the title of Associate Professor
on the basis of academic merits and achievements.

At current rates, salary tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.
The appointment carries leave, medical/dental benefits, and where
appropriate, a taxable financial subsidy under the Home Financing
Scheme for reimbursing either the actual rental payment or the
mortgage repayment up to the relevant maximum entitlement.
