Full Professor of Applied Linguistics

Applied Linguistics concerns the study of the application of
linguistics to all those socially important areas in which language
plays a part.  Within the broad field of Applied Linguistics the
Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen wishes to focus on
naturalistic and instructed second/foreign language
acquisition. Research will specifically focus on the relation between
the naturalistic and instructed factors in the acquisition of modern
foreign/second languages. Special attention will be given to the
factors determining the course and the rate of acquisition processes.
It is not only internal factors of a linguistic, psycholinguistic and
biological nature that will be the object of research, but also and in
particular external factors such as teaching procedures and
socio-cultural factors. Bearing on this research will be recent
developments such as neuro-imaging and CALL.

The professor's research will be conducted within the framework of the
Centre for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG). It is the
faculty's aim to place the Professor of Applied Linguistics also in
the functional charge of the team of language teaching methodologists
in the Arts cluster of the University Centre for Teacher
Education. Within this Centre this team of language pedagogues is
responsible for the training of teachers of Dutch, German, English,
French, Classical Languages, and Frisian.

The position requires
- teaching and co-ordinating teaching in the above field
- co-ordinating and conducting research
- supervising PhD research
- executive and  managerial work
- the further specialisation and expansion of national and
international networks.

Your profile

We are looking for candidates who are prepared to build up with
enthusiasm a team of people who watch closely the latest developments
in teaching and research in the field of Applied
Linguistics. Candidates should:

- hold a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics or Language
Acquisition
- be experienced teachers
- have conducted ample research in the field of Applied Linguistics or
Language Acquisition
- have a demonstrable affinity with Computer-Assisted Language
Learning
- have good executive and managerial qualities
- be able to promote interest in their field
- find it a challenge to work in a dynamic faculty
- be willing to live in or near Groningen
- be prepared to live in or near Groningen.

The University of Groningen offers a gross salary of at least Euro
4.264,- up to Euro 6.222,- (CAO-NU Professor A) per month. The vacancy
is for a full-time professorship A.
