The Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC) is a
research institute of the Faculty of Humanities of the Universiteit
van Amsterdam. At the ACLC are now available

four PhD positions (full time)

One project entitled "Learnability of metrical phonology" is part of a
so called "Vernieuwingsimpulsproject" financed by the Dutch
Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The title of this larger
project is "Adequacy and acquisition of functional constraint
grammars". The director of the project dr. Paul Boersma can provide
further information on this position; phone: +31.20.525.2385, e-mail
paul.boersma at hum.uva.nl

The other three positions fall within the scope of "The Language
Blueprint", which constitutes the basic document for research at the
ACLC. From the research programmes and special theme projects ten PhD
projects have been selected for which candidates may apply. The
projects are listed here below. Projects with a title in Dutch
indicate that good knowledge of Dutch is required.

1. Language typology and language contact.
2. Parts of speech systems in a diachronic perspective.
3. West-Germaanse OV en VO: de status van uitzonderingen.
4. De ontwikkeling van agreement in Romaans-Germaans tweetalige
kindertaalontwikkeling. Syntactische en pragmatische aspecten.
5. Poldernederlands breed uitgemeten.
6. Argumenteren als een moedertaalschrijver? Een analyse van het
gebruik van pragmatisch-retorische middelen in argumentatieve teksten
in het Italiaans als tweede taal.
7. The acquisition of the syntax and pragmatics of reference: a
cross-linguistic and cross-population perspective.
8. Phonology and its relationship to the lexicon in NGT first and
second language acquisition.
9. Language-specific and language-independent dimensions of
phonological working memory.
10. Toegankelijkheid van semantische netwerken bij NT1- en
NT2-kinderen.

For information about a specific project consult our website
http://www.hum.uva.nl/research/aclc and the person(s) listed
there. Other information may be obtained from the managing director dr
Folkert Kuiken, phone +31.20.525.2543, e-mail
folkert.kuiken at hum.uva.nl

Applications accompanied by a curriculum vitae and study results have
to be directed before May 31, 2002 to the Director of the ACLC,
prof.dr.ir L.C.W. Pols, Spuistraat 210, 1012 VT Amsterdam, the
Netherlands. The starting date of the projects is foreseen at
September 1, 2002.
