The Faculty of Humanities is one of the largest faculties at the
Universiteit van Amsterdam. It has six teaching departments or
'institutes': History and Regional Studies, Art and Culture, Dutch
Studies, Language and Literature, Theology and Religious Studies, and
Philosophy. The faculty is closely involved in the cultural and social
life of the local community, is a leading research organisation and
offers a wide range of courses. It has links with numerous cultural
institutions in Amsterdam and its teaching and research bodies are
well-known and respected internationally. This diversity demands a
flexible approach to the organisation of teaching, research and human
resources, allowing scope for personal initiative and development.

PROFESSOR OF ROMANCE LINGUISTICS

job description
The activities of the Romance Linguistics section focus on teaching
and research in the fields of French, Italian and Spanish linguistics
and comparative Romance linguistics. The section teaches parts of the
Master's level first-degree courses in French Language and Culture,
Italian Language and Culture, and Spanish Language and Culture. The
linguistic research currently undertaken within the faculty is
generally marked by a strong data orientation based on clearly defined
theoretical principles. The new professor will be responsible for the
section and will perform duties relating to both teaching and
research. S/he will also contribute to the administration of the
faculty at departmental, institute and faculty level.

requirements

- a doctorate in a relevant field, a specialisation in one of the
aforementioned Romance languages and, preferably, thorough knowledge
and experience in the field of comparative Romance linguis-tics
- international stature in the field
- willingness to teach outside as well as in the immediate field
- wide experience of university teaching and of supervising doctoral
and other students
- teaching and educational skills of a high order and the ability to
teach in both Dutch and English
- capacity to recruit indirect government and private sector funding
- strong leadership and organisational abilities
- capacity to undertake administrative responsibilities within the
section, the department, teaching and research institutes and the
faculty

appointment
The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of
no more than two years. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will
be followed by a permanent appointment. The fulltime gross salary will
be in accordance with professorial scale A (between 4264 and 6222
Euros per month). The selection procedure will involve both a trial
public lecture and testing by an independent assessment centre.
