There is an excellent opportunity for someone to teach undergraduate
and possibly graduate linguistics at the University of Peradeniya in
Sri Lanka. The English Dept. is currently beginning to introduce
linguistics as part of the undergraduate curriculum. All the courses
are currently being taught by one person who cannot handle the huge
load.

Interested parties should apply through the Fulbright Program in Washington
(CIES-Council for International Exchange of Scholars).
Contact: Gary Garrison, Assistant Director for Asia and the Middle East.

         e-mail: ggarrison at cies.iie.org
         phone: 202 686-4019.

The deadline for the next round of Fulbright scholars (beginning in
the fall of 2003 )is this August. Obviously the scholar would have to
be approved by the American side, at which point his or her file would
be sent to the Sri Lankan Fulbright Commission and ultimately to the
department here at Peradeniya. Gary Garrison could offer more
information on what category the applicant would apply to, but it is
my impression that s/he would apply for a senior Fulbright award,
requesting Sri Lanka and the University of Peradeniya as the first
choice.

Two of my colleagues here can answer questions over e-mail. The chair
of the dept is Professor Thiru Kandiah. His e-mail address is
thikan at eureka.lk. The administrative head is Dr. Sumathy Sivamohan
(e-mail ssumathy at sltnet.lk). Currently Professor Kandiah is teaching
all the linguistics courses.

I am over here as a Fulbright Senior Scholar teaching literature for 9
months, and I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone looking for a
year abroad. The students here are absolutely excellent, and for me
it has been a fascinating opportunity.

With kind regards,

Adele Barker
