We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

For an article I'm writing for Language Magazine on the use of
linguistic autobiographies in the classroom, either the linguistics or
foreign language classroom, I'm interested in hearing from anyone who
assigns these, their reasons for doing so, and what their experiences
have been.

Thanks in advance.

Dear LINGUISTs:

I am searching for the Latin original and the full citation of a
passage by Roger Bacon which is often cited by linguists (though
usually without a reference). The passage runs (in one translation)
"He that understands grammar in one language understands it in another
as far as the essential properties of grammar are concerned."

Can someone help?

Thanks,

Dirk Elzinga
