JOURNEES SCIENTIFIQUES SEMANTIQUE ET MODELISATION
DAYS OF SEMANTICS AND MODELING
Organized by the research group 2521 ''Semantics and modeling''
2001-2005 with ENST (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des
Télécommunications).
Since the eighties, the semantic research has been elaborating
theories and formalisms aimed to ensure the flexibility and empirical
coverage required for refined treatment of linguistic data, without,
however, sacrificing the methodological rigor which has placed
semantics among other scientific disciplines since its creation by
Frege and Montague. Innovative elements indicating this development
are the generalization of quantification models, the emergence of
dynamic theories and redefining the domains of semantics and
pragmatics.
As is shown by the recent creation of the research group 2521
''Semantics and modeling'', we're witnessing the emergence in France
of a new community centered around the so-called formal
semantics. From the point of view of this community, the descriptive
and analytical stage must be followed by a modeling stage, whose aim
is to check the predictions founded on observations and, more
formally, to penetrate the abstract mechanisms of meaning composition.
The Days of Semantics and Modeling are intended for researchers whose
work integrates formalizing and modeling stages. The main question to
be considered is the relation between modeling and theorizing in
semantics. Also examined will be studies that show the added value of
modeling for explanation and thus predictive power.
Empirical problems
This conference is intended for work in progress in any domain of
formal semantics, including but not limited to: indexicality,
connectors, prepositions, polarity and free-choice items, definiteness
and indefiniteness, polysemy, wh-words, semantic typing, temporal and
aspectual marking mass and count nouns, semantics of information
formatting, and treatment of plurals.
Modeling
This conference is open to all existing approaches in the domain of
modeling, computational semantics, and work on large corpora. We also
invite work in models born of formal linguistic research (dynamic
semantics, discourse representation theories...), as well as those
developed in the framework of formal language theories (p-calculus,
processing theories (?),µ-calculus...). Although based on formal
justification, these works must emphasize their interest for formal
semantics.

We invite proposals for 30-minute presentations consisting of a
1000-word abstract, in French or in English, following the guidelines
located on the website

In their proposals, the authors must specify the linguistic problem
under consideration, empirical data and the model that they are
developing or using.
Languages of the Journées are French and English.

organisées par le GDR Groupement de recherche 2521 "Sémantique et

Télécommunications)
Depuis les années 80, la sémantique, sans s'éloigner de la rigueur
méthodologique qui depuis ses fondateurs, Frege et Montague, lui
assure une place au sein des disciplines scientifiques, a élaboré des
théories et des formalismes destinés à assurer la flexibilité et la
couverture empirique requises pour un traitement fin des données
linguistiques. Des éléments initiateurs très significatifs de ce
développement sont la généralisation du modèle de la quantification,
l'émergence des théories dynamiques, et des re-délimitations des
domaines respectifs de la sémantique et de la pragmatique.
Comme le témoigne la récente création du GDR Sémantique &
Modélisation, on assiste aujourd'hui en France à l'émergence d'une
communauté nouvelle autour de la sémantique dite formelle. Dans
l'optique partagée au sein de cette communauté, l'étape descriptive et
analytique est suivie d'une étape de modélisation, qui vise à valider
les prédictions fondées sur les observations et, plus
fondamentalement, à pénétrer les mécanismes abstraits de construction
du sens.
Les Journées scientifiques Sémantique et Modélisation s'adressent à
tous les chercheurs qui intègrent une étape de formalisation et de
modélisation dans leurs travaux. On s'y interrogera en premier lieu
sur la relation entre la modélisation et les théories en
sémantique. Seront ainsi privilégiées les études qui montrent la
valeur ajoutée de la modélisation dans une démarche explicative et
donc prédictive.
Problèmes empiriques
Ces journées scientifiques sont ouvertes à toutes les recherches en
cours en sémantique. Parmi d'autres : indexicalité, connecteurs,
prépositions, termes de polarité et free-choice items, polysémie,
indéfinitude/définitude, mots en WH, typage sémantique des entités,
marqueurs temporels et aspectuels, massif/comptable, sémantique du
formatage de l'information, traitement des pluriels.
Modélisation
Ces journées sont ouvertes à toutes les approches actuelles dans le
domaine de la modélisation, de la sémantique computationnelle et du
travail sur grands corpus. Seront considérés aussi bien les modèles
nés dans le cadre de la linguistique (comme les sémantiques
dynamiques, la théorie de la représentation du discours .) que ceux
développés dans le cadre de la théorie des langages formels (comme le
pi-calcul, la théorie des processus, le mu-calcul .). Ces travaux
ayant au départ une justification formelle, les communications devront
mettre en valeur leur intérêt pour la sémantique.
Sont invitées des propositions pour des communications de 30 minutes
comprenant un résumé de 1000 mots, en français ou en anglais, suivant

Dans leur proposition, les auteurs spécifieront le problème
linguistique qu'ils traitent, les données empiriques, et le modèle
