Dear Colleague

Are you a Computational Linguist, Language Technologist or Natural Language
Processing person based in Australia or New Zealand?

If you are, and if you are not currently a subscriber to NLANZ-L (the
Natural Language in Australia and New Zealand mailing list; see
http://www.clt.mq.edu.au/Information/nlanz.html ), then you may not be aware that we
have recently been discussing setting up an Australasian Language Technology
Association.

A constitution for the new organisation has been proposed and discussed, and
is available at www.clt.mq.edu.au/alta/constitution.txt. Recent discussion
on the NLANZ-L mailing list has been supportive, and so we now intend to
move to the next step in the process, which involves establishing an
electoral role and soliciting nominations for the office bearers of the new
organisation.

In the next few days we'll post an announcement to NLANZ-L requesting
nominations for the president, treasurer and four executive member positions
of the proposed organisation. Nominations will close on December 2nd 2002,
and the full list of nominated candidates will be publicised shortly
thereafter. If there are, at that point, more nominations than positions,
then we will move to a vote.

The list of eligible voters will be defined as those Australasian-based
persons who are listed on the 'Computational Linguistics in Australasia' web
site at www.clt.mq.edu.au/Information/oznlp.html. So, if you are not
already on that list, please take the time to register yourself there; and
if you are already on that list, please take this opportunity to check that
your details are complete and correct, and make any changes as necessary.

Best regards

Robert Dale

Knott, Diego Molla Aliod, Cecile Paris, Jon Patrick, David Powers,
