Meeting Description:

LEC-2002 is a high quality intenational conference on Language
Engineering featuring technical paper presentations, tutorials and
product demos/exhibitions. A special session on Testing, Evaluation
and Benchmarking of Language Technology Products and Services is
included.

We are glad to announce LEC-2002, a high quality International
Conference on Language Engineering, being held at Hyderabad during
13th to 15th December 2002.  LEC-2002 will feature experts from many
countries and will include tutorials, technical presentations, a panel
discussion involving academia, industry as well as government, and
product demonstrations and exhibitions. Proceedings will be published
by the IEEE CS Press.

Language Engineering:

	As you know Language engineering is a multi-disciplinary area
involving computer science, logic, artificial intelligence, cognitive
science, linguistics, and statistics. Language Engineering includes a
variety of topics of great current interest to both academics and
industry including Automatic Categorization, Automatic Summarization,
Information Extraction and Information Retrieval from texts and rich
media documents, Optical Character Recognition, Speech Synthesis and
Recognition, Automatic Translation, Text and Web Mining, Multi-lingual
support at system and application levels etc. With increasing
globalization and availability of vast amounts of useful information
resources, Language Engineering is becoming very important to anybody
who has a role in creation, dissemination or use of information.

Organizers:

	LEC-2002 is organized jointly by the Department of Computer
and Information Sciences, University of Hyderabad, and Society for
Computer Applications in Indian Languages.

Department of Computer and Information Sciences:

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers high
quality post-graduate teaching and research progammes (MCA, MTech,
PhD) in all major areas of Computer Sciences, Information Sciences,
Artificial Intelligence, Banking Technology and Information
Security. Current research areas include Computer Vision, Parallel
Algorithms, Combinatorial Algorithms, Geographical Information
Systems, Neural Computing, Natural Language Processing and Language
Engineering, Text Processing, Machine Learning, Speech Processing,
Document Analysis, Data Bases, Expert Systems, Artificial
Intelligence, Distributed AI, Decision Support Systems Software
Engineering, Mobile Computing etc.

The Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of
Hyderabad, has established itself as a premier centre of Research and
Development in Language Engineering. The department is currently a
Resource Centre for Indian Language Technologies under the sponsorship
of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology,
Government of India.

Society for Computer Applications in Indian Languages (SCIL):

SCIL is a voluntary organization for promoting Computer Applications
in Indian Languages.

Tutorials:

The conference will include tutorials on various topics in language
engineering on the first day. The tutorials are open to all Ã¢ÂEuroÂ§' no
registration fee will be charged. However, you must register before
6th December 2002.

Exhibition and Product Demonstrations:

	Exhibitions and demonstrations of Language Technology products
and services are planned. Interested companies may kindly contact the
organizers and book the stalls at the earliest but not later than 30th
November 2002.

Panel Discussion:

The Conference will include a panel discussion/open house where
participants from academia, industry, government and end users will
discuss various issues relating to application and dissemination of
language technology to meet the needs of the society.
