TOPIC:  QUALITATIVE MODELING OF COMMON SENSE UNDERSTANDING

How people understand the physical world is one of the deepest
problems of human cognition. Qualitative modeling provides formalisms
that can be used to express human mental models of the physical
world, and how we reason with them. This talk surveys some basic
ideas of qualitative representations and reasoning, illustrating how
they can be used to model developmental results, as a component in
natural language semantics, and as a bridge between perceptual and
conceptual representations in spatial reasoning.
