DEAN, GRADUATE SCHOOL OF TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION
POSITION DESCRIPTION

As chief academic and administrative officer of the Monterey
Institute's Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, the
Dean has complete academic and administrative responsibility for the
following:

1. Providing overall leadership and oversight for systems, programs,
policies and procedures that foster fiscal integrity and preservation
of school resources of the GSTI.

2. Fostering in the faculty a commitment to academic excellence in
teaching, research, service to the Institute, and external
professional engagement; providing innovative leadership, planning and
continued development of the GSTI's academic program and research.

3. Representing the GSTI to the community at large; providing academic
vision and support for development efforts; fostering and
strengthening interactions with academic colleagues, public, private,
and intergovernmental organizations.

4. Working closely with the President and Office of Institutional
Advancement to raise funds for the GSTI and the Institute.

5. Working with the Academic Vice President and others to ensure that
Institute policies and procedures are observed in all areas of the
GSTI's operations, including academic and staff personnel, recruitment
of new faculty, academic policy, capital programs, and administrative
matters within the GSTI.

6. Demonstrating commitment and providing overall leadership to
support academic, staff, and student diversity with the GSTI.



QUALIFICATIONS:

A BA and an MA from an accredited university are required.  A PhD or
equivalent academic credential is strongly preferred, as is a
demonstrated record of successful academic program management.
Outstanding professional experience as a translator and/or interpreter
is also expected.

Working closely with GSTI faculty and staff, the President, Academic
Vice President, other Vice Presidents, and the Deans of the other
graduate schools, the successful candidate will be capable of
developing and implementing strategic and tactical plans for the GSTI.
An open and collegial management style is essential for developing
good working relationships with GSTI faculty, other graduate school
faculty, GSTI staff and students, other staff on campus, and the
community.

Additional desirable attributes include: Ability to recruit, motivate
and develop the full potential of a large, talented, diverse faculty,
both full- and part-time; Effective communication skills; Evidence of
established professional networks and relationships; Demonstrated
understanding and commitment to technology relevant to the academic
program and GSTI research; Recognized scholarly and professional
accomplishments; Familiarity with the issues facing the education of
interpreters and translators and the international careers environment
for which students are preparing; Ability to anticipate change and to
think productively about the future; Evidence of sound professional
judgement

Compensation is open and dependent upon qualifications and experience.
