We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Hello,

Just a quick query. I was wondering if someone could tell me the
author of the poem: 'Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners' /
'English' and when it was written. You know the one: 'I take it you
already know, Of tough and bough and cough and dough?'. The web is
giving more than one author and I just wondered which was correct.

best wishes,

Karen

Subject: Query: P-stranding languages

Dear colleagues,

I am interested in finding out which languages outside of Germanic
allow adpositing stranding. I am familiar with claims that adposition
stranding is allowed in Kru languages, in Portuguese based Creoles, in
certain varieties of North American French (e.g. Prince Edward Island
French), and in colloquial Welsh. I would be greatful for information
concerning adposition stranding in other languages and relevant
bibliographic information.

I will post a summary.

Klaus Abels
