Subject:  PhD Scholarship in 'Language in Society', Monash University, Australia

The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University
has a PhD scholarship available for a research project in the area of
'Language in Society' which is one of the international research
strengths of Monash's Faculty of Arts.  The scholarship is a special
research scholarship, known as the Monash University 10-off-the-top
MGS in areas of research priority.

The scholarship provides a yearly non-taxable stipend of Aus. $17,609
(2002), and may be held for up to three years. Please note that the
scholarship does not include fees.

The research priority area 'Language in Society' includes over 20
Monash academics working on the description and analysis of language
in its social and communicative context. Research includes the
description of languages and languages varieties in Australia and
other parts of the world (language documentation); work on endangered
languages; studies of language maintenance and shift; language
contact; cross-cultural communication and discourse analysis; second
language acquisition in social, psycholinguistic and educational
contexts; language attitudes studies; jargon and affective language;
language and identity; language policy and planning; forensic
linguistics; issues of computer-mediated communication, as well as
research on linguistic and cultural change. Research at Monash has
contributed significantly to international developments in
sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, language policy,
language documentation and language contact studies.

The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics includes 14 language
disciplines and linguistics (see
http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/schools/lcl/ for further details). The
doctoral candidate would be able to draw on the considerable
linguistic expertise which exists across the School. The School also
houses the 'Language and Society Centre' which was established in
1991.

Award of the scholarship will take into account academic merit,
contribution to the research strength 'Language in Society'' as well
as availability of a suitable supervisor.

Requirements:

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree with first class honours, or
a qualification deemed equivalent by the university, from an
Australian or overseas tertiary institution.

International students and students who require H1 equivalence will
have to have their eligibility determined prior to the application
deadline for this scholarship.

Applicants who haven't already applied for a Monash Postgraduate
Scholarship in the open round closing on 31 October 2002, will also
need to fill in a 2002 PhD application form. Applications forms can be

The awardee is required to commence the scholarship by 31 March
2003. In very exceptional circumstances an awardee may be permitted to
commence the scholarship later (but no later than 30 June 2003).

Applicants should send a letter of application and submit a two page
research proposal as well as the names of two referees. The deadline
for submitting applications to the School of Languages, Cultures and
Linguistics for the 'Language in Society' scholarship is 1 December
