Dear Listers,

Once again I am please to inform you about one of the many positive
ways that LINGUIST is affecting the linguistics community...

http://emeld.org

E-MELD (Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Language Data) is a 5
year project awarded to LINGUIST List in 2001 by the National Science
Foundation. E-MELD aims to preserve endangered language data by aiding
in the development of an electronic infrastructure for effective
collaboration among digital archives; this includes the consensual
development of 'best practice' standards for the documentation of
endangered languages and the creation of a showroom of best practice
to disseminate reference material delineating best practice standards
and software tools that support it.

As we embrace the digital age, researchers are more and more willing
to learn the digital technologies needed for effective EL
documentation for enduring preservation. Though the future of many
EL's is uncertain, the speed in which technology will be able to help
field linguists document these languages increases rapidly. In the
near future any language researcher with Internet access will have at
their disposal a wealth of linguistic data from a vast number of
alternative international electronic archives. This does not mean that
you will have access to academic papers, books, or even dissertations
(go to http://linguistlist.org for these!), this means you will be
able to access lexicons with accompanying sound clips, texts with
their associated video clips, or even field notes from the researcher
(well, if they are willing).

How does this affect you?

Developments from E-MELD can already be seen all over the LINGUIST
site. We have adopted the Unicode Encoding Standard
(http://www.unicode.org/) which, though it may have been painful for
some of you, has made the site compatable with 65,000 unique
characters representing a vast number of orthographies - including IPA.

Originally developed for E-MELD, double clicking on our text input
areas all over the LINGUIST site invokes a clickable version of the
IPA chart for easy entering of phonetic material. Right clicking on a
character in these input areas also invokes a similar character pop-up
menu, also an outcome of the E-MELD project. Another outcome will be
the establishment on the LINGUIST List site as a central metadata
server for the discipline; this server will eventually organize
information on all the language-related resources residing at
distributed sites, not just information on EL data alone.

And how has E-MELD affected us here at LINGUIST?

Although E-MELD supports one graduate student, the whole crew is
involved in the project and more and more editors find themselves
working on this project on top of their normal duties. We are all
aware that our workload will begin to focus more and more upon E-MELD
in the coming months. As we enter the completing stages of the
LINGUIST website, more and more thought and preparation is being
directed toward the E-MELD project, which has and will continue to
affect you. Indeed such a big project needs the hard work of many
individuals; thanks to LINGUIST there are many well trained and
enthusiastic young linguists right here who can make this evolutionary
research change the future of linguistics forever.

Please make a donation so LINGUIST can continue to support this and
other valuable projects that really make a difference to the
discipline. 'Just $5' will make a world of difference.

Thank you for your support.

Subject: Who Your Donations Support - Spotlight Prashant Nagaraja

It all started when I came to Ypsilanti, enrolled for a Master's
degree in Computer Science at EMU, and started looking for a graduate
assistantship. I walked into the LINGUIST List office and just handed
over my resume to Helen Aristar-Dry and Anthony Aristar. They hired me
instantly (I had the confirmation on the next working day). I did not
know then how lucky and fortunate I was to be joining LINGUIST until I
started working on the regular stuff. I started learning new things
and meeting new people. Then I realized that this was the place I
would be sticking to, for a long time.

It is almost a year since I joined LINGUIST; but it feels like
more than that to me, as I do not know when I get to work and when I
am off. It is really very interesting to be working among such
intellectuals with expertise in different fields. When I started to
work I did not know what was happening around this place. Everybody
was talking about Cold-Fusion, which I did not know. But it did not
take very long to catch up with the others as everybody works on it
and they were always ready to help me with it whenever I needed. Now I
feel so proud to be a part of LINGUIST List, which caters to the
Linguistic needs of scholars and students all over the
world. Moreover I am proud to be a part of the team, whose work
reaches and helps a huge population of academics. The crew at
LINGUIST List is absolutely fantastic, they just keep each other
going.

We, the LINGUIST crew, never feel bored, as there are so many
things happening here on the sixth floor of Pray Harold--especially in
the staff lounge. We have comedians, pranksters, nuts, actors,
decision makers and many other characters, which can be seen and
enjoyed only by being a part of the LL crew. And to be sure no one
misses it, we always have a good supply of doughnuts (the crew's
favorite breakfast for Wednesdays). I take pleasure in saying that I
find myself in a diverse environment with people from different
cultures speaking different languages. And we, the crew, owe all this
to LINGUIST List, and indirectly to you all, the people without whose
donations this good work and good will cannot float for long. The
LINGUIST List is a system 'of the people, for the people and by the
people', and that people is you. We cannot thank you enough, whatever
and however we say it, for your continued support for all this
beautiful work. Kindly keep your support going so that LINGUIST List
can keep growing forever. Thank You again!

Subject: How to Donate and the LINGUIST List Hall of Fame

This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
