Doctoral Program 2003-2005
Translation and Interpeting Processes

The Department of Translation and Interpreting and the Department of
Experimental Psychology of the University of Granada, Spain, and the
Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology of the University
of Leipzig, Germany, have joined to offer an interdisciplinary program
focusing on cognitive aspects of translation, interpreting, and
terminology. The program is based on cognitive linguistics and
cognitive psychology approaches.

The program is structured in (1) one year of courses, lectures, and
seminars, (2) one year of directed research, and (3) dissertation
research, writing, and defense. Second year research lines on (a)
Memory and comprehension in translation and interpreting, (b)
Attention, problem solving and translation strategies, (c) mental
representation of specialized knowledge, (d) language production
applied to translation and interpreting, (e) language acquisition, (f)
scientific and technical translation, (g) computer tools in
translation and interpreting processes and (h) Conference interpreting
quality assessment.

Courses are mainly in Spanish (some courses in English) but nearly all
participants speak fluent English. Papers and dissertation may be
written in English.

The program's policy is to encourage just a small number of highly
motivated students to enroll.

PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES: B.A's in Translation, Interpreting, Philology
(Linguistics/Literature), Linguistics, and Psychology.

Second year students may apply to stay one semester in Leipzig,
Germany, conducting their research.

This program has been distinguished as a High Quality Program by the
Spanish Ministry of Education. This distinction entitles students
taking part in the program to apply for grants within the mobility
program funded by the Ministry. Eligible students will receive
mobility grants for the following maximum quantities:

- Travel expenses: within Spain, 300 euros; from a country belonging
to the European Union, 510 euros: from other countries, 980 euros.

- Accommodation and food: 3925 euros (gross)

- Additionally, the distinction increases a student's chances of being
eligible to take part in the national pre-doctoral grants program.

Applications in September, with BA grades transcript, CV and Statement
of Purpose. Registration in October. Teaching period starts in early
November.

Los Departamentos de Traduccion e Interpretacion y Psicologia
Experimental de la Universidad de Granada, junto con el Instituto de
Linguistica Aplicada y Traductologia de la Universidad de Leipzig, se

Este programa cubre nociones basicas de psicologia y linguistica
cognitivas, para despues bifurcarse en tres itinerarios dedicados a la
traduccion, la interpretacion y la terminologia (arquitectura mental
del conocimiento especializado). Se trata de un programa claramente
orientado a la investigacion empirica experimental, aunque tambien se
admiten proyectos relacionados con las nuevas tecnologias en
traduccion, especialmente desde el punto d evista del comportmiento y
