Linguistic Sub-field: Psycholinguistics

Meeting Description:

International workshop on syntactic processing and its relation to the
processing of discourse, information structure, semantics, and
prosody.

Organised by the Max Planck Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience
(Leipzig), in collaboration with Max Planck Institute for
Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen), the University of Leipzig, and the
University of Nijmegen

AIMS AND SCOPE

The workshop addresses the interplay of different types of linguistic
information during language comprehension. While the role of syntax
has dominated research on language processing, it is only recently
that much more attention has been given to the impact of other types
of linguistic information on syntactic processing, such as discourse,
information structure, semantics, and prosody. One question of great
importance is when and to what extent these different types of
information interact with syntactic processing. Our workshop is aimed
at discussing the following issues:

- How can the processing of prosodic, semantic, information
structural, and discourse information be characterized (as opposed to
the processing of syntactic information)?
- How can the processing of these different information types be
dissociated?
- Which types of representations have to be assumed?
- Which types of non-syntactic information can affect syntactic
processing preferences?
- At what point in online processing do different types of linguistic
  information come into play?

The aim of the workshop is twofold: on the one hand, we want to bring
together psycholinguists who are working on the interfaces of
syntactic processing with different experimental methods (RTs, ERPs,
fMRI, Eye Tracking). On the other hand, we would like to discuss
representational issues in the light of theoretical considerations.
