AFRICAN STUDIES SEARCH IN THE HUMANITIES
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Stanford University invites applications for a faculty appointment in
a humanistic field of African Studies to be made at the rank of
tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate professor.  The
appointment will begin in the Fall of 2004. Although funding for this
position will be held in the School of Humanities and Sciences, the
successful candidate will be appointed in the appropriate department:
Art and Art History, History, Linguistics, Music, Religious Studies or
one of the literature departments. Junior candidates should have
completed the Ph.D. by the time of appointment.  Senior applicants
should have compiled a distinguished record of scholarship and
teaching. Applicants will be expected to teach courses at both the
graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will have
a long-term research program that involves research in Africa.  He or
she will be expected to collaborate with colleagues in other
disciplines in the further development of the study of Africa and of
international and comparative area studies at Stanford.

Junior candidates should send a letter of application, CV, statement
of research interests, dissertation chapter or 1-2 other samples of
work, if available, and should arrange for three letters of
recommendation to be forwarded. Senior candidates should submit a
letter of application, CV, statement of research interests, and the
names of three references. Materials must be postmarked by 14 November
