ICGI-2004 is the seventh in a series of successful biennial
international conferences in the area of grammatical inference. The
emphasis of this year's conference is on innovative applications of
grammatical inference.
Grammatical inference has been extensively addressed by researchers in
information theory, automata theory, language acquisition,
computational linguistics, machine learning, pattern recognition,
computational learning theory and neural networks.
AREAS OF INTEREST
- ---------------
The conference seeks to provide a forum for presentation and
discussion of original research papers on all aspects of grammatical
inference including, but not limited to:
* Different models of grammar induction: e.g., learning from examples,
learning using examples and queries, incremental versus
non-incremental learning, distribution-free models of learning,
learning under various distributional assumptions, learnability
results, complexity results, characterizations of representational and
search biases of grammar induction algorithms.
* Algorithms for induction of different classes of languages and
automata: e.g., regular, context-free, and context-sensitive
languages, interesting subclasses of the above under additional
syntactic constraints, tree and graph grammars, picture grammars,
multidimensional grammars, attributed grammars, parameterized models,
etc.
* Theoretical and experimental analysis of different approaches to
grammar induction including artificial neural networks, statistical
methods, symbolic methods, information-theoretic approaches, minimum
description length, complexity-theoretic approaches, heuristic
methods, etc.
* Broader perspectives on grammar induction, e.g. acquisition of
grammar in conjunction with language semantics, semantic constraints
on grammars, language acquisition by situated agents and robots,
acquisition of language constructs that describe objects and events in
space and time, developmental and evolutionary constraints on language
acquisition, statistical modelling of natural language, etc.
Particular emphasis will be given to papers presenting work on
innovative applications of grammar induction in natural language
acquisition, computational biology, Web mining, structural pattern
recognition, information retrieval, text processing, adaptive
intelligent agents, systems modelling and control, and other domains.
LOCATION AND ORGANISATION

ICGI-2004 will be held in Athens. Athens (http://www.cityofathens.gr/)
the capital of Greece, is a city of long and rich history. Being the
birthplace of democracy and modern Olympic Games
(http://www.athens2004.gr/), it has a lot to offer in terms of
history, culture and social life. Greece's geographical location makes
Athens via its International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos'
(http://www.aia.gr/) easily accessible for visitors from all corners
of the world. Athens International Airport is located about 35 minutes
away from Athens, accessible by cab or public transportation.
The conference will be located in the National Centre for Scientific Research
(NCSR) 'Demokritos' (http://www.demokritos.gr/), Athens, Greece. NCSR
''Demokritos'' is the largest self-governing research organisation, under the
supervision of the Ministry of Development of the Greek Government. It is a
multidisciplinary centre, comprising 8 Institutes that cover a wide area of
science, ranging from informatics microelectronics to biology and nuclear
technology. The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications
(http://www.iit.demokritos.gr/) has the main responsibility for the
organisation of the conference.
ICGI-2004 is organised under the auspices of ICGI, the International
Committee on Grammatical Inference
(http://eurise.univ-st-etienne.fr/gi/), and EETN, the Hellenic
Association for Artificial Intelligence (http://ww.eetn.gr/).
CONFERENCE FORMAT
- ---------------
The conference will include plenary and invited talks, software
demonstrations and possibly poster presentations of accepted papers
and tutorials. A special session will be devoted to the results of a
competition on 'Learning Context Free Grammars from Positive
examples'. All plenary and invited papers will appear in the
conference proceedings. The proceedings of ICGI-2004 will be published
by Springer-Verlag as a volume in their Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence, a subseries of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science
series.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
- ------------------
Prospective authors are invited to submit a draft paper in English
with the following format. The cover page should specify: submission
to ICGI-2004, title, authors and affiliation, mailing address, phone,
fax, and e-mail address of the contact author, a brief abstract
describing the work, at least three keywords which can specify
typically the contents of the work. Postscript versions of the papers
should be formatted according to A4 or 8.5''x11'', and the length
should not exceed 12 pages excluding the cover page. The technical
expositions should be directed to a specialist and should include an
introduction understandable to a non specialist that describes the
problem studied and the results achieved, focusing on the important
ideas and their significance.
All paper submissions, review and notification of acceptance will be
done electronically through the conference's WWW pages
http://www.iit.demokritos.gr/icgi04. The submission process is
supported by Cyberchair (http://www.cyberchair.org/).

The Peterborough Chronicle Panel (PCP) is concerned with a variety of
linguistic and other approaches to the mid-twelfth-century manuscript
'E' of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (Bodleian MS. Laud Misc. 636), better
known as the ''Peterborough Chronicle'' (PC). The panel will be
organized in connection with the 13th International Conference on
English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL) at the University of Vienna in
August 2004.
Background
The PC is an outstanding example of very early Middle English writing
and as such known to practically everyone teaching the history of
English (Everybody loves the Peterborough Chronicle, to quote one
colleague). It continues to be a valuable source of data for many
historical linguists and philologists, especially those interested in
very Late Old or very Early Middle English, or the transition from Old
to Middle English. Its linguistic structures and phenomena on the
phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, orthographic, and
discourse level have not ceased to attract the attention of historical
linguists. Major progress has been made in the study of the manuscript
and its language, but ultimate limits and final conclusions have
certainly not been reached.
The year 2004 not only marks the 850th birthday of the last entry of
this fascinating document but also the scheduled publication of a new
edition. We therefore believe it is time for a conference workshop
dedicated solely to this manuscript, its language and its historical
embedding. The objective of the panel is to bring together scholars
working on various aspects of the PC and inform the audience about new
methodologies, current issues, and recent findings in their work.
**Call for Papers**
A number of scholars have already indicated their interest in
contributing to the panel. We are now also publishing a Call for
Papers:
We invite 20-minute papers dealing with any aspect of the language or
history of the Peterborough Chronicle, with emphasis on the
post-Conquest entries. The perspective may be either research-oriented
or reflect the use of the PC as teaching material at university
level. Linguistic papers with focus on other aspects than syntax are
particularly welcome.
The deadline for abstracts is 15th January, 2004. Although the data
used in the paper must be from the PC, there is naturally no need to
include a general introduction to the PC in the abstract. Please
e-mail a 300-word abstract to the PCP organizers (link below) as plain
text in the body of the message. Abstracts sent as e-mail attachments
will not be taken into consideration because of the risk of computer
viruses. If you need to use 'thorn', 'eth', or 'ash' in examples,
please convert the characters into '+t', '+d', and '+a', respectively.
Notification of acceptance will be made by 16th February,
2004. Abstracts will subsequently be published on this website. Please
note that the scholars whose papers are accepted by the PCP organizers
need to register for the conference as well.
Panel Format
The format of the panel will depend on the number of papers we receive
and the time allotted to us by the ICEHL organizers. Typically, 20
minutes (plus 10 minutes for discussion) will be reserved for each
paper.
Proceedings
After the conference, we plan to publish a collection of selected
papers. More information will be available during/after the conference
in Vienna.
