Subject: extra lengthening

Dear Linguists,

I posted a query a while a go about extra lengthening. I would like to
thank Solomon Sara, Madalena Cruz-Ferreira and James L. Fidelholtz for
their helpful responses. Thanks a bunch !

The following is the sum for the topic :
In case of extra lengthening of consonants, we may find difficulty in
showing the phenomenon in the phonetic transcription. The usual
procedure is that we create our own symbol to represent the
occurrence, if there is no symbol in IPA sufficient for the
matter. Then, we put necessary information in a section called
Conventions to explain any symbology we want to use. Another
suggestion is that we put extra consonants to show its 'extra'
lengthening. For example : the word /amba/ which is extra-lengthened
into [ammmba] or [ ammmmmba] and so on.

Arum
