The Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at Louisiana State
University is pleased to announce a one-time-only research
assistantship to support a new doctoral student in the area of
sociolinguistics using child and/or adult English data from Louisiana.
Funding is provided by LSU in recognition of various varieties of
English as important markers of cultural identity for Louisiana
residents. Funding includes $25,000 for four years for a total award
of $100,000; a tuition waiver and/or tuition supplement is also
expected to accompany the award. Co-directors of the assistantship
are Drs. Janna Oetting and Sylvie Dubois. Both of these faculty
members have a history of NIH and NSF funding and maintain large
databases of Louisiana English dialects from speakers who range in age
from 4 to 92 years. In addition to developing skill in
sociolinguistic research methods, the student will help Drs. Oetting
and Dubois develop web-based content about Louisiana varieties of
English.

Currently, 17 faculty members from seven different departments
participate in the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at LSU.
Students interested in applying to LSU's PhD Program in Linguistics
should contact Dr. Arnulfo Ramirez, Chair of the Program at
ramirez at lsu.edu. Students interested in the assistantship are
encouraged to email Dr. Oetting at cdjanna at lsu.edu or Dr. Dubois at
sdubois at lsu.edu.

Application deadline for assistantship is February 1, 2004.
