Job description

The applicant will:
- aid in the collection and development of Irish language speech
  corpora
- annotate speech corpora to standards developed for the project
- participate in training and workshop events for the project
- aid the development of text to speech applications for the project

The applicant is expected to register for a postgraduate degree.

[Note: this post may be shared between more than one person according
to best practice under equal opportunities policy. Duties may also be
split to allow more specialised computing/linguistic skills to be
maximised].


Person specification

The person(s) appointed will be a graduate with a first class or
higher second honours degree in Irish, Linguistics or similar
linguistic subject with speech/computational interests or,
alternatively a degree in Computer Science/Engineering with strong
interest in phonetics/speech. He/she will be a fluent Irish speaker,
should have a thorough knowledge of Irish phonetics, and good
transcription skills.  Some knowledge of Welsh will be an advantage,
and an interest in speech technology and/or computational linguistics
in the Celtic languages. Consideration will also be given to
applicants with degrees in other subjects with the necessary language,
transcription and computational skills who wish to develop a long term
career in Celtic speech technology or computational linguistics.

The person(s) appointed will enjoy working as part of a team and must
have good communications skills with both the general public and with
colleagues in an international environment. While they will receive on
the job support and training they will also be expected to develop
their capacity for independent working and be self-motivated.

Starting date

The person appointed will start work as soon as possible and continue
until the end of 2005.
