The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Description:

Research Associate, Fijian Grammar, King's College London

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate for
appointment from 1st April 2004 to 31 January 2007 in the Department
of Computer Science at King's College London. Closing date for
applications is 9 February 2004, with interviews for the post to be
held as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant will join a newly funded collaborative
ESRC-funded project on ''Verb-initial grammars: a
multilingual/parallel perspective'' directed by Dr. Mary Dalrymple (at
King's College London) and Dr. Louisa Sadler (at the University of
Essex). The project will develop broad-coverage computational
lexicons and grammars for two verb-initial languages: Fijian (or a
closely-related Austronesian language) and Welsh. The research
associate at King's will be responsible for development of the grammar
and lexicon of Fijian.

The project is a part of PARGRAM, an international project to develop
computational grammars within a shared linguistic framework, Lexical
Functional Grammar, and based on common linguistic assumptions. For
details of PARGRAM, see
http://www.parc.com/istl/groups/nltt/pargram. Current PARGRAM members
include Palo Alto Research Center, California; Fuji Xerox, Japan; the
University of Bergen, Norway; the University of Stuttgart, Germany;
and the University of Konstanz, Germany.

Candidates should have:
- native or near-native competency in Fijian or a closely-related
  Austronesian language
- good honours degree in linguistics, computer science, or a related
  discipline
- ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal
  supervision

A postgraduate research degree or experience working as a researcher
would be an advantage, as would knowledge of a contemporary
constraint-based syntactic theory (LFG or HPSG).

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr. Mary Dalrymple
(mary at dcs.kcl.ac.uk) or telephone + 44 (0)20 7848 1576.

Application deadline is 9 February 2004. Potential applicants should

Department, King's College London, Strand, London WC2R 2LS, United
Kingdom, e-mail strand-recruitment at kcl.ac.uk - quoting reference
