Call for Papers

The international conference « Diachrony & semantics of the French
verbal system » will take place at Aston University (Birmingham, UK)
11-13 September 2003. It will address both the study of the diachrony
of the French verbal system and its semantics. Proposals for papers on
these two areas are invited.

The study of the French verbal system in diachrony can hardly ignore
the distribution of semantic values on morphological forms (with the
variety of contextual interpretations they generate) in the course of
their evolution. For instance the cycle leading to preterisation of
the perfect is a well-known example (cf. Nedjalkov, 1988) of
progressive change of form meaning over the course of the evolution of
the system.  Through this combination of diachronic and semantic
studies, it is hoped to reach a better understanding of the tendencies
that characterise the evolution of French verbal form, and the impact
that this observation of trends may have on our grasp of the semantics
of these forms in diachrony.

Non-exhaustive list of conference themes:

' Theoretic and diachronic semantics of the French verbal system (use
of diachronic data and analyses of the theoretical treatment of the
semantics of the French verbal system);

' Semantics and pragmatics of forms of the French verbal system in
diachrony (diachrony of interpretative phenomena at the
semantico-pragmatic interface);

' Syntax and semantics of forms of the French verbal system in
diachrony (diachronic study of the French verbal system at the level
of the syntactico-semantic interface);

' Diachronic and typological perspectives on the French verbal system
( comparison with evolutions of the systems of other languages)

The selection committee will choose some 20 papers on the basis of
their originality and of the rigorous analysis and treatment they
offer. Each speaker will be allotted a 40 min slot (30 min. + 10 min
discussion). The conference languages are French and English.

Proposals should be submitted as anonymous summaries (two A4 pages,
tables and bibliography included, font Times New Roman 11,
single-spaced, 2 cm margins). They should reach the organising
committee by 30th April 2003.

La conférence « Diachronie & sémantique du système verbal du français
» se déroulera à lUniversité dAston (Birmingham, U.-K.), du 11 au 13
septembre 2003. Elle portera conjointement sur létude de la diachronie
du système verbal en français et sur sa sémantique. Des contributions
portant à la fois sur les deux domaines sont attendues.

En effet, létude de la diachronie du système verbal du français peut
difficilement faire léconomie de lexamen de la répartition des valeurs
sémantiques sur les formes (avec la diversité dinterprétations
contextuelles quelles engendrent) au cours de leur évolution. Ainsi,
le cycle menant à la « prétérisation » des parfaits est un exemple
bien connu (cf. Nedjalkov, 1988) de changement progressif de valeur
dune forme au fil de lévolution dun système verbal.  Par cette
conjonction entre études sémantiques et diachroniques, on espère
obtenir une meilleure idée des tendances qui caractérisent lévolution
des formes verbales du français, et limpact que lobservation de ces
tendances peut avoir sur notre compréhension de la sémantique de ces
formes en synchronie.

Liste non exhaustive des thèmes de la conférence :

' Sémantique théorique et diachronique du système verbal du français
(utilisation de données et danalyses diachroniques dans le traitement
théorique de la sémantique du système verbal du français) ;

' Sémantique et pragmatique des formes du système verbal du français
en diachronie (diachronie des phénomènes interprétatifs à linterface
sémantique-pragmatique) ;

' Syntaxe et sémantique des formes du système verbal du français en
diachronie (étude diachronique du système verbal du français à
linterface syntaxe-sémantique)

' Perspectives diachroniques et typologiques sur le système verbal du
français (comparaison avec les évolutions subies par dautres systèmes
dans dautres langues)

Une vingtaine de communications seront sélectionnées par le comité
scientifique, daprès leur originalité et la rigueur de lanalyse et du
traitement proposés. Chacune aura une durée de 40 minutes (30 min +
discussion). Les langues de communication sont le français et
langlais.

Les propositions de communication sont à rédiger sous la forme dun
résumé anonyme (deux pages A4 figures et bibliographie comprises,
police Times New Roman 11, interligne simple, marges 2 cm) ; la date
limite de réception des propositions de communication est fixée au 30
avril 2003.

The Special Session invites submissions from any area of linguistic
interest involving comparative work between Altaic languages.  Such
papers are especially encouraged and may also be considered for the
General Session.  Opening the Special Session and leading the
discussion will be that session's two organizers:

Abstract Submission Guidelines

Presented papers will be published by MITWPL.  Authors who wish to be
included must provide camera-ready copy (not exceeding 15 pages) by

minutes for questions.

An author may submit at most one single and one joint abstract.
Abstracts must be at most two pages, including examples and
references, in 12-point font, and should be submitted electronically
in pdf or txt format via the form on the workshop website:
