MPhil programme in Linguistics
Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS

Programme The 2-year MPhil programme at the Utrecht institute of
Linguistics OTS is intended for students from all over the world who
combine talent with curiosity about language and our cognitive
capacity for it. The programme is open to students with at least a
Bachelor's degree or equivalent; they can complete the requirements
for the MPhil degree in Linguistics in two years.

The MPhil programme offers courses in experimental and theoretical
linguistics and the principles of language use, organized in eight
tracks. In alphabetical order: computational linguistics and logic,
experimental psycholinguistics, language acquisition, language use,
phonetics, phonology/morphology, semantics/pragmatics and syntax. From
these eight tracks, the student will choose a major and a minor. The
programme provides a thorough training in theoretical issues, combined
with a broad orientation on the field and an interdisciplinary
attitude. It includes methodological training, an internship, and a
Master's thesis. In addition to theoretical training and personal
supervision, UiL OTS offers access to a well-equipped library and
specialised laboratory and computer facilities for experimental
language and speech research.

All information about admission (deadlines, requirements, application
form) and about finance (costs of living, tuition fees, scholarships)
can be found through the institute website:
http://www-uilots.let.uu.nl/ma-phdprog/mastersprog.htm

Main deadline: 1 March 2003
Late deadline: 15 April 2003

Institute

The Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS) is a research
institute within Utrecht University's Faculty of Arts. The institute's
objective is twofold: to increase our understanding of language and
speech, and to train researchers who will be able to make a valuable
contribution to this field of knowledge. Faculty includes
approximately 20 professors, 40 (senior) lecturers, and 10
postdoctoral researchers. Currently, about 40 PhD students are
enrolled in the PhD programme. The institute works closely with other
research institutes within the Netherlands Graduate School of
Linguistics (Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap: LOT) to
develop and refine a wide variety of experimental techniques,
software, databases, and equipment.
