Meeting Description:

The XXIIIrd annual meeting of the SALA conference will be held at the
University of Texas at Austin from Oct. 10-12, 2003. The SALA
conferences cover a wide range of issues in the study of South Asian
Languages. A non-exhaustive list includes descriptive linguistics,
historical linguistics, language teaching, sociolinguistics, and
theoretical linguistics.

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes of
discussion) on issues related to South Asian languages and
linguistics.  The SALA conferences cover a wide range of issues in the
study of South Asian Languages. A non-exhaustive list includes
descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, language teaching,
sociolinguistics, and theoretical linguistics.

Papers that relate to the following issues are specially welcome: the
description and analysis of the underdocumented languages of South
Asia (including Tibeto-Burman and Iranian languages, Indo-Pakistani
Sign Language and Romani), and the teaching of South Asian languages
at an advanced level.

All abstracts should be submitted by e-mail as attachments to
sala23 at ccwf.cc.utexas.edu, specifying 'Abstract' in the subject line
and the following information in the body of the message:

- author's name(s)
- title of abstract
- area of linguistics
- affiliation
- e-mail address
- postal address

Abstracts should be anonymous and be either in .txt (plain text,
preferable) or .pdf formats. Abstracts should be limited to two pages
(using 1'' margins on all sides and 11pt font size) including examples
and references. If, for any reason, you are unable to submit the
abstract by e-mail, please contact the organizers.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

Glot International invites submissions of squibs on any subject in any
field of theoretical and/or applied linguistics. Since Glot
International appears 10 times a year and our production time is
relatively short, we have a short turn around time from acceptance to
publication. The review procedure we have set up is also geared at
losing as little time as possible. Contributors can help minimize
delays by keeping to the formatting and length guidelines as closely
as possible.

Important!! Squibs in Glot International have a limit of approximately
1500 words.

Squibs in Glot International:

For Glot International, the most important characteristic is that
squibs be inspiring. They should present new ideas, yet to be fleshed
out in the details, but clearly and one at a time. They find
connections between facts that nobody ever thought were related. They
spell out the beginning of a new analysis, not necessarily daring.
They give you new facts from old languages and old facts in a new
guise. They come up with beautiful observations that somehow seem
theoretically relevant as well. They tell you about wonderful problems
and possibly only hint at a solution.

Submissions and queries for squibs in Glot International should be
sent to the address below. Electronic submissions in Acrobat (.pdf)
format are prefered, other Mac compatible formats (and of course, hard
copies) are also acceptable.
