When our personal narratives no longer intersect, due to the
fragmentary, heteroglossic nature of identity construction in the
postmodern era, how do we create community or a sense of it?  What
roles do language, ideology and power play in community formation?
And how does the meaning-making subject interact with and through the
semiotic systems of its communities?  The graduate students of the
German Department at the University of California at Berkeley welcome
scholars from across the disciplines to engage in this theoretical
discussion.
				
We are open to submissions in any time period from the medieval to the
present.  We are also interested in submissions that approach these
questions from other perspectives in the humanities.  Possible areas
of investigation include but are not limited to:

The language of the conference is English, but submissions in German
are also welcome.  In some cases we may be able to provide a travel

Meeting Description:

The 2003 KATE International Conference will be held in Daejeon, the
Republic of Korea, from June 26th (Thursday) to 28th (Saturday), 2003,
by the Korea Association of Teachers of English (KATE). The theme of
the conference is ''English Language Policy and Curriculum''. On June
26th, 2003, Thursday, pre-conference sessions will be organized by
some SIGs, either in the form of lecture or workshop.

The title of the presentation paper should be sent to the conference
chair by February 15th, 2003, and the abstract (within 500 words) by
April 26th, 2003. When submitting the abstract, please include the
following information: name, affiliation, mailing address, (mobile)
phone numbers, and e-mail address. E-mail submission (with a MS Word
or HWP file attachment) is preferred.
