Description:

The University of Tromsø will be announcing a Professorship in
Linguistics early in 2003. The official announcement will be posted on
LINGUIST in a few weeks, but since the university has official
deadlines which come very soon after the official announcement, we
submit this pre-announcement and encourage interested parties to watch
for further official details.

Note that the application deadline given below (March 1st) is only an
approximate date. The position is expected to be officially announced
in late January or early February, and at that time a revised posting
to LINGUIST will give the correct application deadline. Please do not
submit application materials before the official announcement appears,
although indications of the intention to apply would be welcome.

This permanent position will be associated with the Department of
Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and with the Center for
Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL), a newly created
Center with substantial funding from the University of Tromsø and the
Norwegian Research Council. Funding from the Research Council has been
awarded through their Center of Excellence scheme and is expected to
last for 10 years.

The duties of the professor are roughly 50% research and 50% teaching
& administration. However, during the lifetime of CASTL, there will be
a considerable reduction in teaching (and a commensurate increase in
expectations of research productivity).

The successful applicant will have a well-established research program
in a subfield of generative grammar, and a strong record of
publishing. While nothing should be submitted prior to the official
announcement, applicants will be asked to submit 10 samples of their
work, in triplicate. The letter of application should spell out in
detail how the applicant's research program facilitates CASTL's
research goals, as presented on the (developing) CASTL homepage at
http://www.hum.uit.no/castl.  We expect that the successful candidate
will be a scholar working either in the field of generative syntax or
in the field of generative phonology (or both!). Experience with
supervision and collaborative research activities should also be
discussed in the letter.

The official announcement will also note the ongoing commitment of the
University of Tromsø to recruit women to professorial positions, as
well as noting the expectation that a successful candidate not already
proficient in a Scandinavian language must agree to achieve
proficiency in Norwegian within a relatively short period.

The university also expects to announce approximately three doctoral
positions and two post-doc positions associated with CASTL, and two or
three temporary linguistics positions at the assistant or associate
level, associated with the Department of Linguistics and/or the
English Department. Since - as noted above - the official
application deadline will be posted soon, interested candidates should
watch for a revised posting on the CASTL website, as well as on
LINGUIST.
