SWJL Editor position announcement

Applications and nominations for the position of Editor of the
Southwest Journal of Linguistics(SWJL) are invited. The current
Editor, Jon Jonz, has announced his resignation effective the end of
2004. The Executive Committee of the Linguistic Association of the
Southwest (LASSO), with which SWJL is associated, wishes to name a
successor at the annual meeting in October 2003 so that the new editor
may have a full year to learn the ropes working with Jonz. Thus, in
addition to a one-year term (2004) as associate editor, the new editor
will serve a 3-year term (2005-2007, volumes 24-26), which may be
renewed.

SWJL is a peer-reviewed journal published in two issues per year (June
and December). The journal publishes papers across a broad range of
topics in linguistics, though research papers dealing with the
languages of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico are
especially encouraged. The journal also publishes scholarly reviews of
the literature, book reviews, and occasional commentary on topics of
concern to the readership. Thematic issues and issues prepared by
guest editors occasionally occur. Further information on the journal
is available in any recent issue of SWJL and at the SWJL web site:
 http://www7.tamu-commerce.edu/swjl/public_html/index.html

The SWJL Editor directs and implements journal policy within the
mission and financial parameters established by the LASSO Executive
Committee. The Editor is responsible for all aspects of the journal,
from acquisition of manuscripts to production and mailing of the
journal. The responsibilities include handling manuscript submissions,
securing peer reviews of materials that represent a variety of
linguistic orientations and research methods, editing manuscripts for
content and style, and maintaining the overall academic quality of the
journal. The editorship is a volunteer position; no salary or
honorarium is provided by LASSO. It is expected that the host
institution will provide appropriate support to the Editor as well as
for the journal.

The association seeks individuals with a broad perspective on the
profession, proven organizational abilities, and a strong commitment
to excellence in research. The search committee is particularly
interested in receiving applications from LASSO members in good
standing who have a recognized record of research, publication, and
editorial work, who are committed to the further development of the
mission of LASSO, and who can demonstrate potential for institutional
support. Although the editorship has traditionally been held by one
person, the search committee welcomes any expressions of interest in a
co-editorship or other arrangements.

Expressions of interest and preliminary applications are welcome at
any time. Review of final applications will commence June 1, 2003, and
continue until a set of recommendations can be submitted to the LASSO
Executive Committee. Final applications should include a letter of
application, a curriculum vitae, and a supporting letter from the
applicant's host institution specifying institutional support.

LASSO President Peter Gingiss has named the following four-member
search committee to find a new editor:
Garland Bills (U New Mexico), chair, <gbills at unm.edu>
	MaryEllen García (U Texas-San Antonio), <mgarcia at utsa.edu>
Pam Munro (UCLA), <munro at ucla.edu>
Kirk Widdison (Illinois State U), <widdison at ilstu.edu>

Inquiries should be submitted electronically to the chair of the
search committee or, if you prefer, to any other member of the
committee. Questions about current operations may also be directed to
Editor Jon Jonz <jon_jonz at tamu-commerce.edu>.
