 ==========================================================================
The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Tromsø
Department: Department of Linguistics
Rank of Job: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics, Syntax OR phonology

Description:

The University of Tromsø invites applications for the position of
Professor in Linguistics.

This permanent position will be associated with the Department of
Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and with the Center for
Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL), a newly created
Center with substantial funding from the University of Tromsø and the
Norwegian Research Council. Funding from the Research Council has been
awarded through their Center of Excellence scheme and is expected to
last for 10 years.

The duties of the professor are roughly 50% research and 50% teaching &
administration. However, during the lifetime of CASTL, there will be a
considerable reduction in teaching (and a commensurate increase in
expectations of research productivity).

The successful applicant will have a well-established research program
in a subfield of generative grammar, and a strong record of publishing.
Consideration for a professorship requires a substantial body of
research of high quality beyond the doctorate. Letters of application
should spell out in detail how the applicant's research program
facilitates CASTL's research goals, as presented on the (developing)
CASTL homepage at http://www.hum.uit.no/castl. We expect that the
successful candidate will be a scholar working either in the field of
generative syntax or in the field of generative phonology (or both!).
Experience with supervision and collaborative research activities
should also be discussed in the letter.

The University of Tromsø wishes to recruit women to academic positions.
When two applicants are found to be essentially equally qualified, the
University will rank the female applicant ahead of the male applicant.
Women and persons with minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have mastery of Norwegian or another Scandinavian
language, or must be willing to achieve mastery within a reasonable
period.

The salary for the position follows the relevant Norwegian regulations.
The minimum salary for a full professor is 426.500 Norwegian crowns.

Applicants should also be aware that the Norwegian hiring process takes
considerable time; we do not expect to fill the position before January
1st, 2004.

Applications must be post-marked no later than February 10th, 2003.

To submit an application:

1] Send three collated sets of up to ten academic works [in the default
case, one of these is your Ph.D. dissertation] to the following address:

Faculty of Humanities
University of Tromsø
NO-9037 Tromsø
Norway

AND

2] Send five collated sets of the remaining applications documents
[letter of application, letter of recommendation (optional),
documentation of education, documentation of pedagogical
qualifications, and a list of your academic publications] to the
following address:

University of Tromsø
NO-9037 Tromsø
Norway

In your letter, please mention Reference Number 02/5520. The package of
academic works will be returned at the end of the process.

The university also expects to announce approximately three doctoral
positions and two post-doc positions associated with CASTL, and two or
three temporary linguistics positions at the assistant or associate
level, associated with the Department of Linguistics and/or the English
Department. These positions will be announced on LINGUIST.
