The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Universität Potsdam
Department: English linguistics/linguistics
Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics, General Linguistics, Language
                 Acquisition, Phonetics, Phonology, Psycholinguistics,
                 Syntax, Second Language Acquisition
Required Language(s): Dutch (Code = DUT); English (Code = ENG); German,
                      Standard (Code = GER)

Description:

Research position in Second Language Acquisition (BAT-O IIa/2)

Who we are:
The research project "C4 - Prosody and information
structure as forms of 'input' in second language
acquisition" is part of the Sonderforschungsbereich 632
Informationsstruktur: Die sprachlichen Mittel der Gliederung von
Äußerung, Satz und Text recently approved by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft and located at the University of Potsdam
(Potsdam Germany). Ours is an experimental psycholinguistic
study examining the relationship between information structure and
word learning in second language acquisition and will collect reaction
time and accuracy data from adult subjects responding to prepared
stimuli in the L1 (German) and the L2s (English and Dutch).

The nature of the job:
We will have one (half) position, available as of July 1st 2003 for a
research assistant who will be responsible for the preparation of
German language stimuli, programming or phonetic analysis, will take
responsibility for the scheduling of subjects and data collection, and
provide assistance with other aspects of the collection and analysis
of data. The project is scheduled to run from 2003-2007.

What we are looking for:
Minimal requirements for this position are native speaker competence
in German, a completed Magister (M.A.) in linguistics or language
studies dealing with a phonological or phonetic topic, and a
demonstrable background in psychology, psycholinguistics, first or
second language acquisition in the form of a major (Hauptfach), minor
(Nebenfach), study concentration, or experience as a student assistant
on research projects. A serious interest in both second language
acquisition research and theoretical linguistics is a sine qua non for
this job. It is expected that the candidate selected will do a
doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the project, possibly
extending the research to look at prosodic properties of a pitch
accent or tone language as one of the L1/L2 pair.
