Meeting Description:

This conference provides a platform for discussion of issues
concerning varieties of English and implications for the teaching of
English in the Asia-Pacific region.  The conference will focus on a
number of sub-themes including:

- language planning/policies
- the role of English in a multilingual society
- linguistic descriptions of varieties of English
- the use of English across distinct linguistic and cultural groups
- the use of English in mass media and the Internet
- corpus-based research on varieties of English
- implications of varieties of English for language teaching
- approaches, methods and strategies in the teaching of English
- professional development for the teacher of English

A 150-200 word abstract (2 copies) together with a 50 word biodata
should reach us not later than 31 July 2003.  Paper presenters will be
informed of acceptance of their abstracts by 31 August 2003.  The
abstract can be sent by e-mail (as a file attachment) or by mail to:

Linguistics, University of Geneva, Switzerland, August 23-27, 2004

We are pleased to announce that COLING 2004 will take place at the
University of Geneva, Switzerland, on August 23-27, 2004 (main
conference dates), together with satellite events before and after the
main conference. Information about submission, registration and venue
will be posted in due time at the conference URL. The head of the
program committee for COLING 2004 is Prof. Sergei Nirenburg
(University of Maryland Baltimore County), and the head of the
organizing committee is Prof. Margaret King (University of Geneva).
