THE PROFESSORSHIP OF ENGLISH AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS
AND DIRECTORSHIP OF THE RESEARCH CENTRE FOR ENGLISH AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS

The Board of Electors to the Professorship of English and Applied
Linguistics invites applications for the Professorship which will
become vacant on 1 October 2004 on the retirement of Professor Gillian
Brown.  It is hoped the successful candidate will take up appointment
on 1 October 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter.  The Professor
will also be the Director of the Research Centre for English and
Applied Linguistics which undertakes research focussing on second
language learning processes in the areas of morpho-syntax, semantics
and pragmatics, particularly with respect to English.

The appointment will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the
University.  The University is committed to equality of opportunity.
