conference supported by IEEE france will be from 15 to 20 March 2004
in Tunisia.  The topics of the conference are about Sciences of

Meeting Description:

Following on from the highly successful First Symposium of Hispanic
Linguistics held at the University of Guildford, the Second Symposium
of Hispanic Linguistics will be held in 2004 at the University of
Southampton, where it is also intended to launch a new association
entitled Spanish in Society (SIS).

There will be two main types of presentation: 30-minute research
papers and plenaries given by the following guest speakers:

Prof. Mercedes Bengoechea, Universidad de Alcala de Henares, Spain.
Prof. Rainier Enrique Hamel, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana,
Mexico.
Prof. Henk Haverkate, Emeritus Professor, University of Amsterdam, the
Netherlands.
Prof. Ralph Penny, Queen Mary College, University of London, UK.

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 300 words
on theoretical and/or empirical research in: Hispanic
sociolinguistics, pragmatics or discourse
analysis. Contrastive/comparative studies between varieties of Spanish
or between Spanish and other languages, and studies in the
aforementioned areas applied to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign
language, will also be considered. We intend to publish a selection of
peer-reviewed articles.

Deadline for the receipt of abstracts: 31 August 2003.
Format: please send abstracts as either rtf or word documents.

The Symposium's official languages are English and Spanish. The
