Description:

The successful candidate will join several members of the Center of
English Corpus Linguistics involved in the research project ''Foreign
language learning: phraseology and discourse''. Under the supervision
of two staff members (a psychologist and a linguist) and in
collaboration with a Phd-student in psycholinguistics, the candidate
will be responsible for the execution of the sub-project ''Global
discourse markers in L1 and L2 writing'' in which we propose to study
the use of global discourse markers(metadiscourse, segmentation,
digression) in L1 and L2 writing (Dutch and French) from a twofold
perspective: production - which signals does the writer use to help
the reader reach a shared mental representation and comprehension
which signals will have a positive impact on the readers comprehension
of the text. Two main research lines are planned: RESEARCH LINE 1: THE
USE OF GLOBAL DISCOURSE MARKERS AS REVEALING CROSS-LINGUISTIC AND
DEVELOPMENTAL FACTORS IN SECOND-LANGUAGE LEARNING RESEARCH LINE 2: THE
IMPACT OF GLOBAL DISCOURSE MARKERS ON TEXT COMPREHENSION IN L1 AND L2.
