The Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) at
the University of Tromsoe is arranging a conference in linguistics on
October 2-4 to mark the first year of its operation. The confirmed

The themes of the conference are central issues that CASTL aims to
investigate, namely formal analyses of natural language phenomena in a
broad cross-linguistic perspective. These include:

PHONOLOGY
* universal scales in phonology
* segment strength and positional neutralization
* the nature of prosodic representations
* interactions between phonology and morphology

SYNTAX
* the status of parameters in linguistic theory and their relevance to
acquisition
* the nature of displacement and locality
* the architecture of clause structure and extended projections
* the representation of argument structure and other lexical semantic
properties of words
* the properties of categories such as _noun_ and _verb_
cross-linguistically

One-page abstracts are being solicited for posters for the
conference. All abstracts will be considered which treat natural
language phenomena using formal tools of linguistic analysis, but
those which bear on the abovementioned themes may be preferred. Topics
with comparative or typological relevance, or which treat understudied
languages, are encouraged.

Abstract instructions:
Prepare one anonymous abstract for review, and one camera-ready
version with title of poster/paper, name of author, and affiliation on
three separate lines at the top. Use pdf, Word, or plain text (rtf
ok). Include contact information (most importantly, an e-mail address
where you can be reached in July) in the body of the e-mail.

Abstract formatting requirements:
Abstracts must not exceed one page of text in twelve-point with
one-inch margins on A4 paper (at most 50 lines of text including title
etc.; for US paper an equivalent text box has about 0.6'' margins top
and bottom and 1.2'' margins left and right). An additional page may
be added for examples and references. To improve readability, the
examples may be inserted into the body of the text, but the text must
not exceed 50 lines including the three lines for title, author, and
affiliation.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Linguistic Association of Finland is organizing a symposium on

Syntactic Functions - Focus on the Periphery

to be held in Helsinki, Finland, November 14 - 15, 2003.

The symposium will bring together linguists interested in questions
dealing with syntactic functions. We invite papers addressing
theoretical questions as well as papers taking a specific (empirical)
viewpoint of one (or more) particular language(s). We especially
encourage papers that concentrate on the syntactic status and
description of "peripheral" constituents - such as adnominal and
adverbial modifiers, adpositional phrases, converbs, adjuncts,
discourse particles, various clause-size constituents etc. Possible
themes include:

- language specific problems in determining the syntactic function
of (a) specific constituent(s)
- the critical examination of principles used to define syntactic
functions
- the borderlines between "the core" and "the periphery" or between
obligatory and optional constituents
- the status of syntactic functions - are they primitives or
derived?

Furthermore, we warmly welcome scholars working on spoken language:
What kind of syntactic functions are there in spoken language? Does
the evidence from spoken language challenge the traditionally assumed
syntactic functions? Other topics relating to syntactic functions are
equally welcome.

The deadline for submission of abstracts (in English; max 500 words)
is July 31, 2003. Please submit your abstract by e-mail to the
following address: <synfunct-organizers at ling.helsinki.fi>. The
abstract should be included in the body of the message. Please
indicate clearly whether your abstract is intended as a poster or a
section paper.  E-mail submissions are strongly recommended. If,
however, you send your abstract by ordinary mail, please provide an
e-mail address as a contact address.

Participants will be notified about acceptance by September 1, 2003.
