The Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) is a new initiative
established at SOAS funded by the Lisbet Rausing Charitable Fund, to
support the digital archiving of materials on endangered languages.

ELAR is one component of the Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project
along with the Endangered languages Documentation Programme (ELDP) and
the Endangered Languages Academic Programme. ELAR will be responsible
for digital archiving of language materials collected by researchers
working within ELAP, those funded by ELDP grants, and other donated
materials. ELAR is located within the Department of Linguistics, an
active research community strongly committed to extending the
frontiers of theoretical and field linguistics research within the
Schools mission to be a centre of excellence in research and teaching
related to Asia and Africa.

We are now seeking to appoint a digital language archivist, to
commence 1st September 2003, to establish, develop and maintain a
major new digital language archive containing text, audio, video and
metadata materials on endangered languages. A web-based interface to
the archive is planned for development. There will also be
opportunities to be involved in training courses and seminars on all
aspect of digital language archiving.

The appointee should have demonstrated knowledge and skills in
linguistic analysis, digital language archiving, linguistic metadata
(including OLAC standards), and web-based and multimedia
publication. A record of experience and skills in establishing and
maintaining a digital language archive and associated metadata
repository, plus proven administrative, team-work and organisational
ability is essential. Fieldwork on minority or endangered languages
would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish, develop and
maintain the ELAR archive, to work together with a half-time technical
officer, to contribute to the research profile of the Linguistics
Department, and to be involved in workshops and training courses
(eg. summer schools). Development and maintenance of links with other
digital language partner archives will also be expected.

Annual leave is 30 days per year plus statutory and bank holidays.
USS pension scheme will be available.
