The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: The University of Potsdam
Rank of Job: Researcher
Specialty Areas: Phonology, Psycholinguistics, Syntax, Typology

Description:

In the context of establishing the newly founded
Sonderforschungsbereich 1963 ''Information Structure'', the following
positions are advertized at the University of Potsdam/The Humboldt
University Berlin:

(1) Researcher (full time). Typology

This position is linked to research project D2 (principal
investigators: Gisbert Fanselow, Caroline Féry, Manfred Krifka). The
project aims at identifying the typology of the means of expressing
information structure and at identifying concepts of information
structure that can be justified on a formal-empirical basis. We seek a
researcher for developing a pertinent questionnaire, supervising other
researchers working with this questionnaire, and integrating their
results into a coherent typological framework. A typological
orientation, expertise in at least one of the fields of phonology,
morphology, syntax, and semantics and interest in the others,
acquaintance with typological methods (and, ideally, with
psycholinguistic offline methods and sociolinguistic methods) are
required.

(2) Researcher (half time) Intonational phonology.

This position is also linked to research project D2. The position was
created for discovering intonational means of expressing information
structure in different languages. Expertise in (intonational)
phonology, experimental techniques, and typological interests are
required.

(3) Researcher (half time) Syntax

This position is linked to research project A1 (principal
investigators: Caroline Féry and Gisbert Fanselow). The project aims
at formulating a model of the phonology-syntax interface with special
emphasis on the expression of information structure. The position
complements a full-time phonology position advertized earlier. We seek
a syntactician with good knowledge of and interest in intonational
phonology.

(4) Researcher (half time) Psycholinguistics

This position is linked to research project C1 (principal
investigators: Reinhold Kliegl and Gisbert Fanselow). The project aims
at identifying the cognitive costs and benefits of expressing
information structure distinctions, in particular by word order
variation but also by intonational means. The position complements a
full-time psychology position We are looking for a linguist with
expertise in syntax theory and psycholinguistic research methods
(reading times, eye movement research, visual world paradigm).

Positions (3) and (4) may be filled by the same person. Position (4)
may also be upgraded to two-thirds position under certain
conditions. All positions are advertized for a period of 4 years. The
formal requirement for a full position is a PhD. Researchers employed
for half time positions are expected to complete a dissertation linked
to the topic of the research project they are linked to.

Applications should be sent to Gisbert Fanselow
