Postdoctoral Positions: Natural Language Processing and Knowledge
Based Systems at the Institute for Language and Information
Technologies, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

The Institute for Language and Information Technologies (ILIT) at the
University of Maryland Baltimore County has two openings for
postdoctoral fellows in the area of knowledge-based natural language
processing systems. The successful candidates will join a team of ILIT
researchers working on ontological-semantic analysis and generation of
texts, acquisition of ontologies, lexicons and other static knowledge
sources, developing new and improving existing computational and
descriptive semantic and pragmatic microtheories and working on
knowledge acquisition tools (including GUIs) and resources. These
tasks will be defined in the framework of specific research projects
at ILIT. Their duties will involve design and implementation of
processing or knowledge components of language processing
applications, management of small software development teams,
publication and dissemination of research results and participation in
fundraising activities.

The ideal candidate for the first position will be a highly skilled,
inventive, quick learning and enthusiastic applications-oriented
software engineer. He or she must have a predisposition for building
working systems; a knack for practical problem solving; and
integrating and maintaining complex and changing software
environments. Ability to work with or quickly and painlessly learn
different programming languages, operating systems and environments is
assumed. For reference, currently we use Lisp, Java, C++, C and Perl;
Windows, Unix and Mac OS X; Ingres and PostgreSQL. He or she will also
possess good communication skills and an excellent command of
English. Knowledge of additional languages will be a plus.

The ideal candidate for the second position will be an expert in
formally describing knowledge about language and about the world for
natural language processing applications. He or she should have a
strong preference for broad-coverage, computationally tractable
description of language phenomena rather than building formal theories
on a few selected examples. Excellent communication skills and a
perfect command of English are a must. Knowledge of other languages
will be a strong plus.

The positions will be for one year, starting September 2003, with a
possibility of an extension. Salary will be commensurate with
credentials and experience.
