The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Rank of Job: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Syntax, Bantu Linguistics
Required Language(s): Narrow Bantu

Description:

SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES
(University of London)

Research Assistant
Department of Languages and Cultures of Africa
3-year Fixed-Term Contract
Commencing 21,125 GBP p.a. plus 2,134 p.a. London Allowance
Vacancy 03-57

The Research Assistant will be part of the AHRB funded project "A
dynamic typology of pronouns and clitics in Bantu and Romance" led by
Dr. Lutz Marten (SOAS) and Prof. Ruth Kempson (King's College
London). The project investigates morpho-syntactic micro-variation in
clitic and agreement systems in Romance and Bantu, using the tools of
Dynamic Syntax, which places particular emphasis on linear order for
syntactic analysis, and the role of context in utterance
interpretation.

The postholder will mainly be involved in the Bantu part of the
project which plays an important role for the empirical base of the
project as a whole. In addition to analytical-theoretical and
comparative aspects, the Bantu part involves a descriptive component
which includes extended fieldwork in East and Southern Africa, to
which the postholder is expected to make a significant contribution.

The appointed person will be expected to have a PhD (or be close to
completion) and expertise in theoretical and/or African
linguistics. Fieldwork experience and relevant language skills will be
an asset.

We hope to appoint an individual who will work both independently and
in co-operation with other members of the project and the Dynamic
Syntax community. The appointed person will be expected to be
dedicated to the formal analysis of African languages, to develop an
active research profile and to participate in the academic life of the
Department as well as in the friendly and lively Dynamic Syntax
group. Other duties include the preparation and presentation of
research outcomes at international conferences and through
publication, participation in the organization of workshops and
conferences, and other activities relevant to the project.
