PhD Studentship in African linguistics

SOAS is inviting applications for a 3 year PhD studentship covering
tuition fees and an annual stipend of £11,000 p.a. (UK citizens
only). Due to AHRB regulations, students must have been resident in
the UK for the last three years to qualify for an award. Students who
have been resident in an EU country other than the UK for the last
three years qualify for a 'fees only' award.

Candidates should ideally hold a postgraduate qualification such as an
MA degree or equivalent in theoretical or African linguistics and have
knowledge of syntactic/semantic theory and/or Bantu linguistics. The
student will be enrolled in the Department of Africa at SOAS
(University of London).

The PhD student will be part of the AHRB funded project 'A dynamic
typology of pronouns and clitics in Bantu and Romance' led by Dr. Lutz
Marten (SOAS) and Prof. Ruth Kempson (King's College London). The
project investigates morpho-syntactic micro-variation in clitic and
agreement systems in Romance and Bantu, using the tools of Dynamic
Syntax, which places particular emphasis on linear order for syntactic
analysis, and the role of context in utterance interpretation.

The student's work remains to be decided in detail, but it is planned
that this work provides a detailed case study of one or two Bantu
languages either from a typological or a more theoretical perspective
and should lead to a description and analysis (in Dynamic Syntax) of
agreement, subject- and object marking, and relevant verbal syntax in
a specific Bantu language, including 6 months of fieldwork with some
comparative Bantu evidence and discussion of the relevance for
linguistic theory.
