Description:

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer (Scale A or the
beginning of B) in Hispanic Languages/Linguistics. The post is to be
taken up on 1 September 2003 or at an agreed date thereafter, in any
case not later than 1 February 2004.

The field in which applications are sought is Spanish and Portuguese
languages/ linguistics, as part of the School's wider plan to develop
the teaching of linguistics throughout the curriculum in a way that
responds to the needs of students in particular languages. The
successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the
Department's standing as one of the leading centres of Hispanic
studies in the country by undertaking research of international
quality, and by developing innovative and attractive courses at
undergraduate and postgraduate level, as appropriate in conjunction
with other language/linguistics specialists in the School and in the
Department of Linguistics.

In line with the Department's fields of excellence (see below), an
interest in one or more of historical linguistics, sociolinguistics
and the cultural aspects of language, non-European varieties and
contexts, or translation theory will be an advantage; and the
successful candidate must have the ability to contribute to the
Portuguese studies programme. S/he will enjoy working closely with
colleagues in both research and teaching, and will take a due share of
pastoral and administrative duties in the Department and the School of
Modern Languages.

The appointee will have:
- a PhD in a relevant field, and/or equivalent published proof of
  research ability and potential, and a commitment to research and
  publication
- the capacity to develop courses that will enhance the Department and
  School programmes at postgraduate level
- the capacity to offer PhD supervision
- the ability to teach undergraduate courses in Spanish and Portuguese
  linguistics, including some with an emphasis on contemporary
  language, and to give instruction in language
- the capacity to develop and manage the Department's profile of
  Portuguese and/or Brazilian studies
- a fluent command of Portuguese
- the capacity to contribute to administration in the Department and
  School.

Salary range Lecturer A/B Scale: 22,191 - 27,339 GBP per annum.
