Dear Linguists,

The Saarbruecken Corpus of Spoken English (ScoSE) is now
available on the internet.

http://www.uni-saarland.de/fak4/norrick/scose.htm

The Corpus consists of three parts. The first two parts are made up of
transcriptions of jokes and stories from audio-taped talk recorded by
Prof. Neal R. Norrick and his students at Northern Illinois University
and Saarland University. Most of the excerpts come from real
conversations among family members and friends, fellow students and
colleagues. The third part comprises stories recorded in interviews
with senior citizens aged 80 and older in a retirement community in
Indianapolis, Indiana.

You are very welcome to use the Corpus for linguistic research. Any
questions should be directed to Neal R. Norrick
(n.Norrick at mx.uni-saarland.de).

Best wishes,

Claudia Bubel

Author(s) needed for:
LANGUAGE ISSUES AROUND THE GLOBE: A REFERENCE GUIDE

This book will survey topics of language politics, linguistic
identity, ethnic conflict, and issues and geo-political
linguistics. Each entry will examine a particular geographic area
where language issues have figured in its recent political
history. Some examples would include the Quebecois issue in Canada,
linguistic ramifications of ethnic conflict in Eastern and Central
Asia, banning of languages such as Kurdish in Turkey, problems of
nationalized languages in places like India, communication issues in
the EU and so forth.

I am looking for an author who will be contracted to to head up this
book project. This project could be undertaken either as a single
author, small team of co-authors or a contributed volume in which the
responsibility of the volume editor would be to find contributing
authors to write chapters. The main author/editor would receive
royalties starting at 8% and escalating to 12% for sales over 2500
(this will be negotiated).

There is a small honorarium pool (up to $1500)for payment of
contributors. (The volume editor could later put out a call for
contributors- who would receive a free copy of the book and an
honorarium depending on the number of contributors). If undertaken with
2-3 co-authors they could simply split royalties the hope is to have
experts (PhDs)in various areas of Political Linguistics take this on.
The book is intended, however, as a reference work for
non-specialists: students, educators, general interested readers.

Inquiries should be emailed to me.
Candidates should submit a CV, and writing sample to me via email
attachment, fax (203)-226-6009 or mail to
