MULTIMODALITY AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS
Call for Papers and Registration

We are pleased to announce this BAAL/Cambridge University Press
Seminar to be held at the University of Reading, UK on 18-19 July
2003.

The guest speakers are Professor Guy Cook (University of Reading),
Professor Gunther Kress (University of London, Institute of
Education), and Professor Sue Walker (University of Reading).

The objective of the event is to bring together researchers working in
areas of applied linguistics which impinge on multimodality, to
address the questions of how applied linguistics may be informed by
current research on multimodality, and how applied linguistics can
contribute to the development of knowledge about multimodality. We
welcome presentations on any of the following themes:
- multimodality and the new media
- multimodality and multi-mediality in academic and educational
contexts
- multimodality and literacy practices
- the creation of multimodal corpora
- multimodality and typography
- multimodal text analysis
- theoretical concerns, including discussion and evaluation of
appropriate theoretical and analytical frameworks for the study of
multimodal discourse.

The deadline for abstracts for 40-minute papers is 31 March
2003. Abstracts should be submitted as e-mail attachments to James
Simpson (j.e.b.simpson at reading.ac.uk) and should be no longer than 300
words. Abstracts should also contain the following information:
(1)Paper title
(2)Name(s) of author(s)
(3)Affiliation(s) of author(s)
(4)Contact information (postal address, e-mail address and telephone
number)
(5)Equipment needed for the presentation

We especially encourage the submission of proposals from postgraduate
students. We are offering three student scholarships for the seminar
for student members of BAAL which will cover accommodation and
registration. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, you
should submit an application by 31 March 2003. This should be in the
form of a 200-word statement outlining the relevance of the seminar to
your own research. Priority will be given to those presenting a paper.

Short versions of accepted papers will be written and circulated
before the event in order to optimise the level of
discussion. Participants will be invited to write up papers presented
at the seminar for publication.

Registration for the seminar will cost UK £19. Accommodation in
student halls is available. For further information and a registration

Journal of Universal Language	

Call Deadline: 30-July-2003

The Journal of Universal Language calls for papers for
the JUL 4:2, which will be published in September, 2003.

Honorarium:
As a token of our gratitude, the authors whose paper
will appear in the Journal of Universal Language
will be given the $1,000 honorarium (which is subject
to taxation ).

Topic Areas:
The Journal of Universal Language is concerned with
various areas of artificial language, universality
in language, and language typology.
The editors encourage the submission of papers on
proposed themes as well as on other topics relevant
to the interest of the Journal of Universal Language.
Each volume contains two issues, published in March
and September. The language of publication is English.

Format:
1. The length of a manuscript should not exceed 25 pages.
2. A 200-word abstract should be given at the beginning of
each manuscript.
3. Manuscripts should be submitted on A4 paper, with the
margins at least 4cm on all four sides of each sheet.
They may be single-spaced and/or double-sided, if desired.

Important Dates:
No Submission deadline: We accept manuscripts throughout the year.
Notification of acceptance: August 15, 2003
Submission of camera-ready papers: September 15, 2003

Submissions:
1. Electronic submissions are acceptable.  Acceptable file
formats are Portable Document Format (.pdf) and MS Word (.doc).
Please send your file in an attachment to jytak at sejong.ac.kr.
2. For hard copy submissions, please send 3 copies, accompanied
by a cover letter which includes the author's name, affiliation,
address, and home or office phone number, to:
