So far, 409 people have made a donation to LINGUIST, that's 2.35%
of our 17,000+ subcribers. If every one of our subscibers gave $5.00,
we would raise $85,000 - We 'only' need $50,000.

(The LINGUIST List Personal Directory is one of the most popular
services that we offer, and it's free. Help us keep it running with a
donation.)

Dear Subscribers,

We hope you've had the opportunity to look at the Directory of
Linguists section of our People & Organizations mini-site:

http://linguistlist.org/people/personal/index.html

It is one of our most popular and fastest growing sections of the
revamped LINGUIST site. It features professional information on over
6,000 linguists - an increase of over 1,000 since this time last year!

Thanks to the new database structure behind the LINGUIST site, users
can search and/or browse this facility with ease. Perhaps you
particularly admire a certain linguist's work and would like read
other publications by him or her. You can then simply browse our
listings alphabetically at the site listed above, or you can search
them at:

http://linguistlist.org/people/personal/search-personal.html

You can then view the person's publications and courses taught, as
well as any books announced on LINGUIST. The directory even includes
a separate facility to search just for linguists' e-mail addresses.
All that information with just a few clicks!

The another useful feature of the Directory of Linguists is the
ability to browse by linguistics or language specialty. For example,
if you are interested in the history of linguistics or in the Uralic
family, a search for each would bring up 19 and 7 linguists
respectively - and new linguists are added everyday. Our search is
even so powerful that you can narrow down the number of syntacticians
listed (over 300!) by searching for syntacticians who specialize in
Spanish, which will give you 14 linguists. These capabilities make
the directory a fast and uncomplicated way to get in touch with
colleagues working in your field and to share resources, discuss
current issues, and so on.

If you haven't yet added yourself to the directory, it is very easy
and only takes a few minutes. There is a special log-in form for
first-time users, located at:

http://linguistlist.org/people/personal/first-sign-in.html

that will take you straight to the page where you can enter your
professional information. Once you hit 'submit', you will really be
able to interact with the linguistics community!

Sincerely,

Marie Klopfenstein
Editor

It's hard to believe that I have been working for LINGUIST for almost
three years now. I remember that when it was first suggested to me
that I work for LINGUIST, I was afraid that I didn't have nearly
enough expertise to help run a website! Now I program in ColdFusion
with (relative) ease and have participated in the creation of the new
LINGUIST site. And it is not only my computer skills that have
benefited from working at LINGUIST; this fall I began my Master's in
Linguistics, thanks to the support I receive as an editor. I would
like to say thank you very much to our readers; you not only make
LINGUIST a great place to work, but also a wonderful opportunity for
future linguists!

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far

This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew
for your support.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
