Re: Linguist 14.1242

 J K Chambers informs me that the 'open tick/check' symbol that I
mention in the second last paragraph of my review of his book
*Sociolinguistic Theory* in issue 14.1242 is in fact a printer's error
introduced in the second edition. I therefore retract my criticism of
the author's use of this unusual 'phonetic' symbol.
